Mary Lou's Story

Life Hi to all my friends and teachers from NP! You may remember that I moved the summer before my senior year from Wallingford to Richmond, VA. I was not happy to move because in the four years I was at NP, I was very happy and had many friends. Everyone at NP welcomed me, a shy girl from Virginia with a funny accent, and made me feel right at home. Thank all of you for that! I did not have a happy senior year in Richmond because no school could compare to NP and no friends or teachers could measure up to all of you. However, there was a silver lining to the dark cloud. I moved in across the street from a young man who was in college at Virginia Tech, Bo Hagen, and we began dating. I went to Radford College, which is 20 mintes from Va. Tech, and we continued dating on and off until we married in August of 1971. Bo and I moved to Roanoke, VA, which is actually where I grew up before moving to PA. I did my student teaching in Roanoke County while he taught Math there. I was fortunate to get at job teaching elementary music in the middle of that year and taught for two and a half years until the birth of our twins, Amy and Steven, in 1974. I "retired" from teaching to raise the kids and taught piano lessons at home. We had our third child, Mary Katherine (Katy) in 1980 so I stayed home another five years. When Katy went to Kindergarten, I did a half year's leave of absence at her school doing music. The next year, I did a part time teaching job three hours a day at a local junior high school. I then substitued until I felt the time was right to return to teaching. After turning down several full time positions, I was finally offered the job I wanted: part time elementary music, at the school I had student taught at years before, Green Valley Elementary School. I started there in 1989 teaching three days a week. When the twins went to college, Va. Tech of course, I went to full time teaching and picked up another school. o Holiday programs, etc., but I made it. Then in the mid nineties, I was able to stay full time at Green Valley. I now teach at Green Valley and pick up a few Kindergarten music classes at another school near by. I love what I do and have now accumulated 21 years. Green Valley is a wonderful school and I get to do the thing I love most: teach music to children. Bo retired from teaching Math, Computer Science, and Architectural Drawing, and coaching Golf five years ago. He had three State Championship Golf teams in his twenty years coaching. He walks me to the car each morning with a cup of coffee to go and wishes me a "good day". He stays busy with our six grandchildren, four of which live close to Salem. He is "grandpop" in the best way. He has kept Katy's two, Hayleigh, age 7, and Kevin, age 5, on an almost daily basis for 5 years while Katy is pursuing her degree in Computer Information Technology. One of our twins, Amy, lives in Blacksburg near Va. Tech and is a Computer Engineer for a local company. She has two children, Nicholas, age 2, and Emma Lou, age 6 weeks. We see them often since they are only thiry minutes away. Our other twin, Steven, lives in Richmond which is three hours away, but we see them whenever we can. He is also a Computer Engineer for a company there, and has two children, Theo, age 6, and Ellie, age 1. We love being Gramma and Grandpop better than anything else in the world. We live in the house we built thiry years ago in Salem with our cat, Gremlin. I lost both of my parents in the last ten years, which has been hard. I used some of my inheritance to build an inground pool and spa in the back yard, and the kids (and ME) love it. We don't have much spare time, but when we do, we relax at the pool and enjoy the family. Bo loves geneology so he spends a lot of time updating his website and gathering new family information. I treasure my days at NP and look forward to hearing from many of you in the days to come.
