Mary's Story

Life I don't remember if I had given any information for the 10th reunion so I'll start from after high school. I attended the University of Indianapolis on a partial basketball scholarship and also played on the softball team. I loved playing basketball for my college coach. Unfortunately, he passed away when I was his assistant my last year there (I was on the 5 year plan) and I became the interim head coach. That was definitely a learning experience for me which I enjoyed very much. After I graduated with an elementary education degree, I applied at different colleges / universities for Graduate Assistant positions. I ended up taking a full-time basketball assistant coaching position at Valparaiso University where I coached for 5 years. I met my husband there, we married on October 7, 1995 and during the 97-98 season I found out I was pregnant with our first child. Maria was born in December of 1997. After that season, I decided my coaching career would be put on hold but I was the director of their summer basketball camps for the next few years. Our second child, Benjamin was born in 1999 and the day we moved out of our home in Porte...Expand for more
r, Indiana, I found out I was pregnant with our third child, Luke. He was born in January of 2003. Back up just a little. My husband, John, worked at LTV Steel for several years before they filed bankruptcy. When they did that, John started looking for work elsewhere and was hired as a test engineer at BAE Systems in Fort Wayne. So, we packed up and moved with me kicking and screaming the entire way down Route 30. Ok, a little exaggeration. A little. I definitely did not want to leave my family and friends back home in NW Indiana but we've been here for 5+ years and we're happy. Fort Wayne is a great place to live and raise a family. After Luke came David in January of 2005 and Jacob in December of 2006. Since my time at VU, I coached for our kids' school, Holy Cross Lutheran for the 7th & 8th grade girls' basketball teams a few seasons and about a year ago ('06), I started selling Usborne books. Now, with five kids including a six month old, I'm officially a stay-at-home mom - no more coaching, no more books, atleast for a few years. After Jacob goes to school full-time, who knows? I might just kick back and enjoy the quiet.
