Mary's Story

Life, as of January 10th, 2009 Damascus (Portland), OR. Married 45 years to Merle Campbell, we have three wonderful daughters;. Two handsome grandsons, 5 & 6 and a charming 3 year old granddaughter. All now live within 45 minutes of us We are retired, have yet to do all the things we planned. We have the suit cases packed ready to leave at a moments notice for anywhere. We always took our big dog(s) when we traveled on the road or went camping. The 3 grown 'puppies' were wonderful companions but were really big, they totaled 470 pounds of loving, energetic, tail wagging, slobbering dog! We lost 2 of them in 2007. We just lost 10 year 10 month old Delaney the last of the three., she had seriously compromised mobility problems, however in spite of her disabilities she was very happy all the time. That was inspiring to us.... Now ... they are gone ..... When Merle and I first met we were still going to school, me UofO and Merle PSC now PSU. I had a beautiful white 1954 Ford convertible, Merle had a pretty yellow Cadillac and a gorgeous Ja...Expand for more
guar XK120 roadster. We go to all the old car shows we can... Taught art for a few years, did all the PTA and volunteer school board stuff while the girls were growing up. Sold St. Johns Knits for Nordstrom for several years. I miss the wonderful customers and the perks but also love retirement. Loved Army life, loved living on base, seeing the country, volunteering at Mt. Vernon and Woodlawn Plantation and the camaraderie of the other military families. Merle joined the Army National Guard in June 1961 and promised he would get out as soon as he could, sure enough 'true' to his word, he got out Sept 1994 after 33 years 3 months of service. (Me thinks he liked it too much.) Still painting, Mt Hood is my favorite subject, Opal Creek a close second. Take my easel everywhere we go. Have not played golf for several years, we are considering taking it up again. We were just too busy before retirement to play well enough to be enjoyable. Still love antiques, old cars, old songs and that poor worn out old man as long as he takes me fly fishing.
