Mary T.'s Story

Life Hello! I am enjoying my life. I draw and paint. I retired as an elementary school teacher and principal in 1999 to care for my father. My mother now lives with my husband, Walter, and me and our five cats (Bo Bo, Maggie May, Otis Thomas, Wilson and Miss Priss) in New Smyrna Beach. Son Clark Van Hoten is 34 and lives with his wife, Vici, in DeLand. He is the light of my life. I would love to hear from old friends. I put a lot of information under "Work Biography" because I have spent most of my life in education. School I graduated from St. Peter's Elementary School and DeLand High School. I attended FSU, DBCC, Penn State and graduated from Wichita State in Kansas and NOVA in Fort Lauderdale. Then I spent my adult life in school! I taught K,1,2,3,4 and was an elementary principal. I don't have anything to do with schools, at the moment, and am a hospital volunteer. College I graduated from DBCC, Wichita State University and Nova University with bachelors in education and masters in administration and supervision. I attended Florida State (GO,SEMINOLES!) and Penn State (GO, NITTANY LIONS!) I am a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at FSU and have made many friends and contacts through the sorority. I became an elementary teacher and principal and retired in 1999. Workplace Before earning my BS, I taught in Minter, Alabama, right outside Selma, in 1968. After earning my degree, I taught second grade in Taipei, Taiwan...39 children of six nationalities...a bath of fire for a beginning teacher! Later, I taught second grade at St. Patrick's School in Gainesville, FL. When I moved home to Deland with my son in 1976, jobs were hard to come by. I accepted a position as a teaching assistant at Seville Elementary in Volusia County. That October, I was hired as a first grade teacher at Enterprise Elementary, where I remained for five years. I loved teaching and having the challenge of teaching different age group...Expand for more
s. I then taught combination classes of grades three and four at Faulkner Street School in New Smyrna Beach, which, incidentally, my mother attended beginning in 1919. After that, I taught kindergarten at Edgewater and Osteen Elementaries. I decided to try an "out-of-classroom" experience and became a primary resource teacher for a year. I had also started my masters in administration and supervision. I missed the classroom and went back to kindergarten at Read-Pattillo Elementary. I was going to stay there, when I was asked if I would like to be an asst. principal at Orange City Elementary, working with a high school classmate, Jerry Gill, who was the principal. Why not? I started at OCS in August of 1990 and became principal in 1996. I loved being able to give teachers what they needed. My first love was still the classroom, and, while I know I was a "natural" teacher, I had to work at being an administrator. Still, I loved it and found it very difficult to make the decision to take an early retirement in 1999 to care for my father. When push came to shove, there seemed to be but one choice, and I do not regret it. I still miss "my" teachers and always will. How fortunate I was to have such experiences! My classes ranged from seven to thirty-nine students, and, for many years, they averaged above thirty. Now I feel that I've "been there, done that" successfully and am enjoying different choices. I renewed my teaching certificate for five more years and took a watercolor class where I placed first in the watercolor division of the DBCC art show! I hold educational certifications in early childhood, elementary education, gifted education, English as a Second Language, administration and supervision and School Principal. I am proud of them because of the hard work I put forth to achieve them. I wasn't the best student, and I never was in love with school, but I wanted to make school a place where children wanted to learn.
