Matthew's Story
Life
I'm supposed to talk about life here, and my previous bio talked about what jobs I've had, what education I received, and my life in the military. I don't have much to tell outside of that. I have a dog, whom I love very much, but he lives with my parents in Chicago. My family and I have grown very close over recent years, which is great. Both sisters are now married, and I have two great nephews in Albuquerque who are decked out in all the latest USMC garb.
School
I hated high school, as did most people, I imagine. I was no one special socially, pretty big as band geeks went, and dreadful at all attempts at sports. I met a lot of people who had quite an impact on me; whether they'll ever know it, I don't know. Hopefully I'll get a chance to tell them at a reunion or something.
College
I studied for 4 years in Rochester, NY, earning my bachelor's degree in horn performance. Though I left in 1999, I didn't graduate until 2001 by transferring credits in. I have also studied at the University of Rochester College of Arts and Sciences, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Rollins College (Winter Park, FL). College was a good time for me. I met lots of friends, but, more importantly, I learned some very important life lessons, including how to proceed after school and how to make sound decisions that I won't regret later. I had an excellent professor in my studio, who really helped my lo...Expand for more
ve what I do, even though I frustrated him to no end. It was hard, but I'm better for it, and as soon as it was done I got the heck out.
Workplace
In college I worked for my school (the Eastman School of Music) in the development and public relations department as a graphic designer. After graduation, I went for the 180 approach and worked at Disney in Orlando in Character Entertainment. While there I was at the Magic Kingdom, in Parade Entertainment. I also worked briefly as a manager in 2000 and Magic Music Days in 2002. After nearly 3 years, it was time for another 180, so I took military leave and joined the US Marine Corps.
Military
I enlisted in May 2002 and graduated from Parris Island in August with 3rd BN, L Co. After recruiter's assistance, I reported to Camp Geiger for Combat Training and graduated in September with E Co. I reported to MCAGCC Twentynine Palms in September and was with the Combat Center Band until April 2005. I was promoted to LCpl in December 2002, Cpl in July 2003, and Sgt in March 2005. I was commissioned as a 2ndLt in August 2005 through the Enlisted Commissioning Program. After graduating from the requisite schools, I was assigned to Truck Co, HQBN, 1st Marine Division, in Camp Pendleton, CA as a logistics officer. In 2007, I was temporarily assigned to Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment for deployment to Al Taqqadum, Iraq in March 2007.
