Mavis's Story

I got married while still in High School (Don't do it!!!) to Tom Walsh, who joined the Marines and after I graduated, we lived in San Diego for a couple of years. When he went to Viet Nam, I moved back to Kennewick... working at Woolworths in Pasco (remember them?? *lol*) anyway, I went to CBC at nights and after Tom got back, I started working at Douglas Uniutd Nuclear out in "C" area at Hanford. I became a computer programmer and Tom went to school learning accounting. after a couple of years we moved to Los Angeles, CA. where I worked at Litton Industries and Tom worked as an accountant for Host International. His compamy bought a chain of gift shops, restaurant & beach resort in the US Virgin Islands and they sent him to check their accounting system. I was able to tale a leave of absense for a few weeks to go along and we both loved it there. When they asked him to become their Controller, we went back to California, sold the house and moved. I got a job at the College of the Virgin Islands in the computer department. We bought a boat and learned to Scuba dive. Great place to have a boat as there are lots of islands to explore and the weather is fantastic. However, it's not the best place to actually live and the schools left a lot to be desired..., even the private ones. We decided it would be best to move back and he was able to get transferred to Houston, TX.in 1978 which is how I ended up here. All I knew of Texas was as a kid growing up in the desert Panhandle, so Houston was a pleasant surprise... very green and lots of flowers... also lots of rain, so it's quite humid. Tom and I split up about a year after moving here, and he went back to Washington. I had a series of programming jobs here, each better than the last. I was happy being sin...Expand for more
gle and my daughter grew up and got married. I met Bill in July of 1993 and 14 months later we got married. It has been almost 16 years now .. wow.. it has gone fast! We love to travel and spent our honeymoon in Hawaii. Since then weve made trips to Colorado, Arches NP, Oregon , Vancouver Canada, Yellowstone, Maine, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Panama, a cruise to Cozumel, and of course all over Washington as my 2 brothers live there. My daughter and 4 grandchildren now live near Salem, Oregon and we go to see them when we can. I retired in March 2009 and we bought a travel trailer. Our first retirement trip was 3 1/2 months from Houston, across to San Diego, then up the coast as far north as you can go in Washington, stopping for a week or two in some beautiful places including La Jolla, Malibu, Monterey, San Francisco and the Redwoods. We stayed in Oregon to visit my daughter & grandchildren and see my oldest granddaughter's high school graduation! She's just finished her first year of college now.. amazing! We also stopped in Kennewick for a while to visit my brothers, the place has changed quite a bit since 1964!! We went across Idaho, and into Wyoming, then Colorado Springs and home. We couldn't stay put for too long, so this spring we spent 6 weeks along the Florida coast from the Canaveral area, south to the keys, the Dry Tortugas, the everglades then Florida's gulf coast with all the beautiful white sand beaches. We are headed out again next week to spend a month in Alaska. Can't wait!. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Connie Ackerblade, because she was one of my best friends and I owe her an apology. If I won $100 million, I'd give a bunch of it to my daughter & other family, then spend the rest on travel, travel and travel.
