Mazhar's Story

Life After graduating from Sullivan in 1988 I went to UIC to do my B.S. in Electrical Engineering. I believe I did not have much of a life during these four years because UIC turned out to be a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. I believe the graduation rate for the Engineering college was something like 25%. Julius Tabang, and Tran Chung were also attending UIC along with other people that I knew from Sullivan. I completed my B.S.E.E in 1992 from UIC and decided take time off and get married. I actually went to India to get married there in December of 1992. I had not gone to Hyderabad, India in a long time and it was a culture shock for me. I really liked the people there and the warm hospitality. I also got a chance to see many historical sites in Hyderabad and see how the poor live. There is a big gap between the poor and the rich. After I came back to Chicago, I then decided to go back to grad school. My wife was working at a Bank as a student load coordinator while I went to Grad School at UIC. I then got a job at Motorola about midway through my coursework. I quit Grad School and worked full time in the Japan Cellular Division of Motorola for three years. I then started my Master's again but this time in Computer Engineering instead of Electrical Engineering because I ended up doing sofware development for cell phones. I ended up finishing my Masters while working at Motorola in 2000 from NTU. NTU is a collaboration of major universities across the country. Some of the schools I took classes were at: SMU, University of Maryland, UMASS, USC, University of Florida and etc. This was a nice experience for me because I got a nice blend of te...Expand for more
aching methods. I worked for Motorola for about 6 years before joining a startup company called PrairieComm. My boss from MOT had gone their and convinced me to also join. The was in the year 2000 and everbody was singing the IPO song. This company was private and was planning on going IPO. This company developed software and semiconductor chips for cell phones. It was like riding a roller coaster with this company. We went from great times to almost closing the door. Luckily in 2005, Freescale Semiconductor bought our company. The ironic part of this is that Freescale is a spinoff from Motorola. Motorola in early 2005 spunoff their Semiconductor division into an independent company called Freescale. It is going back to the mother ship again for me. I am currently a Sofware Project Manager enjoying what I am doing because I get a chance to work on next generation cell phones and features. I get a chance to lead teams from all over the world to work on features. I also got a chance to travel while at work. I went to Paris France to work with Nortel Networks to work on the very first UMTS (3rd Generation cell phones) voice calls. Paris indeed very beautiful. Currently, I am happily married for about 16 years. I am who I am because of the inspiration of my wife. My gave up her career to take care of the kids. I have three kids. The oldest one is a boy who is in 7th grade and is 13 years old, the second one is a girl and is 10 years old. She is in 4th grade. My youngest one is another boy who is 7 years old and is in second grade. I live in Hoffman Estates since 2000. I have no regrets in live and feel blessed to have all the things that matter to me.
