Melanie's Story
THEN:
Who I was in school with at St. Paul's and who my teachers were:
Teachers: Cowley, Conrad, Coppenger, Abaunza/Thompson
Father Dawson and a northern Irish Priest were the guys running the show besides Mrs. Berens. The Irish guy sang the old hymns and singing part to the litergy gorgeously. Dawson was a kind, sweet man.
Kids I went to school with: Jennifer Bundrick, Lynn Clapp, Beth E. who I hear teaches there now, Maria, Margaret Frank, Lawley Jones, Bobby Christina, Garth Spruell, Brandon Hayes, Julie Trinchard, Anita Patterson, Ritt whose last name I can't recall, another boy I can see clearly but can't remember the name of who went on to St. Pius and whose mother was an artist......-- now I remember - Warren somebody, Pat Hotard...MIchelle somebody,
I rode Louis's bus with Patrick, Danny and Harry who lived out in Kenner, and a bunch of others.
I remember Ms Betty and productions of Dr. Doolittle, Man of LaMancha, Sound of Music, the Singing Nun, and others and later met her granddaughter while working in speech sometime about 2003/04. I remember Mrs. Harris who I adored and her son Hooper and visiting their 200 yr old home uptown with Carolyn Abaunza's class and...Expand for more
seeing her working artist's studio.
Ms. Grout I remember who was apparently friends with a high school friend Nina and her mom who were members of the church.
I remember Feast of Lights so beautiful there and when Betsy blew out the huge beautiful stained glass window of the Ascension and Mrs. Harris and others organized a project to recycle the broken glass into ornaments and such.
The older Spanish teacher I remember who had tales of the Day of the Dead and Mexico.
And then there was Ms. Bobby.
I remember Anne Nolan, Shannon Woody, Ms. Cable and her daughter Jan
I remember the custodian who worked there and chewed chewing tobacco. Was there a spitoon? I don't remember.
I remember the ride home on the bus the day Dr. Martin Luther King died as we drove down Loyola past the federal building where people marched in honor and mourning.
I remember the big red prayer books and wish I still had mine from back then. I remember the back stairs down to the church from the classrooms.
I remember visits by small groups from the symphony orchestra, trips to the French Quarter, Lake Vista Girl Scout Troup. Xmas caroling in Lakeview at Pete Fountain's house down all those lanes.
