Melisa's Story
College
When I graduated from Seary in 1995, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I didn't want to stay in Searcy. I received a scholarship from UCA, so that's where I ended up. I was in the Honor's program which enabled me to spend a year in France as a nanny in 1997-1998. Upon my return, I changed my major from photojournalism to French. I spent time auditing linguistics and neurology classes. I graduating in August 2000 with Honors. I returned to France in October of that year and began teaching English. In 2001 I decided to go for a French diploma in linguistics from the Université Lumière Lyon II. I'm still working on it, though I should finish this year. The French system isn't really set-up to go to school part-time and work. Oh well. When I complete this diploma, I'll either quit, or go for ...Expand for more
a maîtrise in neurolinguistics.
Workplace
While in college, I did odd jobs. I babysat afterschool for the same family for the 4 years. I cleaned houses and tutored in French. Though, I did work at Wal-mart the last year and half on weekends and on summer vacations. Since I've been in France, I've taught English. I spent three years as a language assistant (similar to a practice teacher). This past year I was "promoted". I taught a few classes at the Université Catholique at the business school and the engineering school. I also worked for a company that did language lessons via telephone. That was an experience! Now that I'm in the teacher circuit, I imagine I'll have several small teaching positions at the catholic university, if I don't change directions and find a position with an international company.
