Melissa's Story

Life I got married in 1999, and have been with my husband since 1995. We have two wonderful children. Our daughter, Jayda-Lee was born in 1997, and our son, Kieran, was born in 2002. Still in Yellowknife! Want to leave here one day, but it's been good for us here, so there's really no rush. School One thing I'll never forget about school, is the way Khunh Nguyen (sp?) made all of us laugh. I remeber in Mr. Jones' grade 10 Bio, we had a substitute one day. During roll call the sub called Khunh's name and Khunh completely ignored the teacher. Finally, I hit Khunh on the arm, and motioned for him to say "here", and he looked at the sub and said stone-faced "I no speak no English". I totally miss school. We had so much time back then. Time to learn, time to have fun, time to sit and think about nothing! I miss being carefree, and knowing that I would be taken care of. I miss having teachers who care about my future. Now, I'm a Mom, and the roles are completely reversed. I still have fun, I'm still ...Expand for more
carefree, and I'm still taken care of....but just in completely different ways. Oh how our lives change! College I can't even honestly say I "went" to college. I was aiming for a major in psychology, and after one year, I had to call it quits. I thought I was a super mom, and could juggle full-time university courses by distance ed, while raising two kids, AND working for the gov't part time. Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. The good thing is, when I initially applied, I applied for the wrong reasons. All of my former classmates were moving back with degrees, and I still hadn't even filled out my first application! I panicked, and since I always had a passion for psychology, decided that I'd better get a degree under my belt as well. Now, four years later, I'm sitting here without a peice of paper, but I have a peace of mind because I know that one day, when and if the time is right, I'll finally go to university. And heck, I think it will be fun to stay in the same dorm as my daughter! HA!
