Melissa's Story
HMMMMMMMM, what to write? Where to start? I've been, done, and have too many t-shirts to wear. Though I claim Alabama as my home I had the misfortune to be born in Michigan when my parents went there following a job offer. Of course both my parents were born in their parents bed in alabama so I claim it anyway. I like to tell people that I'm so southern I'm the first generation in my family to be born in a hospital! If that ain't as southern as Grits then nothing else is. And of course being southern I come from a VERY large family that has roots sank deep into our country. Both sides of my family tree has been researched and it is just amazing how far back we were able to go on my Mom's side (back to the 1400's in Germany) and all the interesting facts and characters that have turned up on my Dad's side (anyone that knows the family will NOT be suprised by that)His first ancestor came over in the 1600's and was a Magistrate for the King of England, but like Mears' (the extra "e" was added later) have been doing every since at the first sign of a rebelion my family jumped ship and fought for the winning side... this time :) and we've had family members in every military action our country has participated in since. I am a member of DAR, and DOC. Through this same line I discovered that my Great Grandmother was full Cherokee and her parents walked the Trail of Tears. As soon as my fathers registration is completed I will also be aplying to the Cherokee Nation to be recognized as a Native American. Several of my Aunts have completed their registration and have received there numbers.
The "e" was added to this branch of the family by my dear Granny. It seems my GrandPa Jodies family operated a tad bit on the wrong side of the law ( not that I see anything wrong with running moonshine myself, it's were we got NASCAR from )and she being a God fearing woman didn't wish for people to think HER kids were heathens so she added the "e" So yes I am related to Rick and Mark Mears, hmmmmm NASCAR drivers...Expand for more

I have had restless feet for most of my life and have traveled and lived from Michigan to South Fl, North Carolina to Idaho. As well as overseas, but my heart always belongs to my Sweet Home Alabama.My husband and I hope to retire here one day within the next 10 yrs. Until then I will just keep enjoying all the wonderful places I have been so lucky to visit and live. Knowing that I will eventually come back home keeps me going and keeps the moving exciting, though I must admit I am now old enough now that the shine has worn off and it's just not as easy to pack it all up and move on down the road anymore.
During my travels I have preformed a wide variety of jobs as well as owning my own business. I had a cleaning business in West Palm Beach and there I cleaned a wide variety of things from a yacht to the Palm Beach Co Morgue! (I only had to clean the office area, but I STILL took someone with me :) )I have worked as an Exec Asst in Atlanta, for the AirForce as a GS in the finance office in Turkey, and as a Deisel Machanics asst in Tn. Not too mention too many other jobs to name (though I did really enjoy working as a promotions director for a talk radio station in NC) I have never shied from hard work or an honest buck. Growing up poor taught me many valuable lessons the least of which is I don't like being Poor! :) Because of my own wandering feet and my marriage to a career soldier my poor resume looks more like a book of odd jobs and locations than a resume. I am currently working at home, our latest move happened just as our economy took a nose dive and there just aren't any jobs in this area to be had. But I've been blessed in my life and with my husbands salary we are doing okay, but I do miss having a life other than wife and mother. It's nice to be just Melissa sometimes, and here that's who I am here, not Mrs.James, not Alex or Lila's Mom, just plain old Melissa.
