Melissa's Story

Life My life summed up in 1000 words or less? Phew! To summon it up, I work in Travel. While in college, I went to work in a travel agency. I started out working in the IRS building downtown DC. I could tell you stories! But I don't want to scare anyone. Needless to say, many of the people I talked to didn't even know where Canada was! I left that company just before the owner was indicted for illegal doings (she gave Government rates to non-government contracts) and went to work for a large, well known company Rosenbluth International. After 10 years I was tired. I was in pseudo management and unfulfilled. I quit to do Web-design at the height of it's popularity. I hated that too. Then I went to work for another agency, Uniglobe, as Operations Manager. Turns out that owner had just gotten out of jail for something to do with corporate embezzlement of their own corporate money, plus they weren't paying taxes. They had no travel agency experience. That was fun. Then a month after I started, September 11 happened. Need I say more? We sat behind our desks and played Snood. Who would fly? This is when it hit me...if this woman can do this and she is clueless, why can't I? So I grabbed my best friend and we started our own Travel Agency. Sounds easy? Ha! It was expensive, tiring (14 hour days) and hard work. In order to pay for the little things like food and electricity and of course our cell phone bill, we had to get another job. Something easy and with flexible hours. Yes, of course, Security. Yes, that is right. I was a Security Guard. At Dulles Airport. No, not TSA. We were real security. We worked the gates to the runways. Co...Expand for more
nstruction and employee access vehicle points. Fun, if you like to talk to stinky, men and women with no teeth all day long. And yes, we received approximately 3 marriage proposals a week. I searched vehicles, people etc, found guns, knives and dirty underwear. I did get to have several people arrested, that was the upside. The only upside. I was very tired of working two jobs. So... we decided to take Getaways Unlimited to Florida. Best move I ever made. Home again! I love what I do... most of the time! I don't get to travel as much as I did working for someone else. However, the benefits are awesome! I am not married, but I do have one awesome daughter, Courtney (21), who brings to mind the word INDEPENDENT in Capital letters. She loves to travel as well and refuses to settle down until she has seen what she wants to see first. I admire that spirit. It also terrifies me! She refuses to move here and stays in N. Va. So I must wait to see her when she is in "the area" a couple of times a year. I love it down here. I own a house on more than an acre (and less than 2) in a rural area outside Orlando. I have my dogs and cats (all rescues) and 1 horse (waiting to move from Virginia). My business is growing and I am hoping to travel more. I still have my classic Triumph TR-6. (Yes, my dad still has the Austin Healey. I have to wait on that one!) Basically, I love where I am. I don't think I can move away from growth but at least we are no where near the capacity of Northern Virginia. I am hoping to never see that again! I keep expecting more to happen so keep in touch! Hopefully, I can stay away from ex-criminals...
