Melody's Story

Wow! GCHS and in the 60's! As a Freshman during Speech Class we learned President Kennedy had been shot. We heard about Martin Luther King conducting freedom marches and wondered why. None of us knew what it meant to be prejudice. An HONOR student, Tom Hess, was kicked out of GCHS because his hair was too long, he had a Beatles hair cut. (Today he is my brother-in-law and a retired VP at Xcel Energy.) We were required to address our teachers only by Sir and Ma'am. Girls were required to wear dresses/skirts. If you smoked, you were bad but we went to our share of woodsies. One 1966 classmate was killed in Vietnam, Junior Dalton. We honor you here JD. The 1966 class held two very important distinctions; the LAST graduating class, the school was condemned. The second honor was being the LARGEST graduating class since 1948, all bright enthusiastic young people eager to take on the world. as on 2 separate occasions, spending 10 yrs in Orange County, California and now back to beautiful Highlands Ranch, Colorado. I went from being a shy student to a confident businesswoman. My career has been in the sales profession. I was an IBM sales representative for a number of years. I loved this job, got to use that killer instinct. Went to a company in California as their Director of Business Development and now responsible for marketing and compliance for 8 states of a large financial institution. I completed an Exec. MBA Program at CSU at Denver. It's never too late! I have been married for many years sadly my husband recently passing away. , have a beautiful daughter and granddaughter, who are the love of my life. And the funny thing, today... I still have the same wants, desires, needs that I did at age 18....CHOCOLATE! God Bless you Gilpinites, home of the Eagles, black and orange! (I know you changed the colors!) What a special camaraderie we share, even if we haven't met.Melody Ames Shepherd Class of 1966
