michael's Story

I am retired from the USPostal Service(30 years) and retired from Calif. National Guard (20 years). Who would have thunk it back at Troy. I only lived in yorba Linda for six years. Any other time six years in a location is a short amount of time but as you know it was the sixtys. From my perspective now it seems like a whole lifetime, so much going on. I had a great time in those six years, remember them and the people fondly. One of my earliest rcollections of Troy is at the very beginning in 9th grade and Jim Clark cured me of chewing my nails. I remember sitting in class( I think it was english), we were sitting in a circle, Jim was sitting across the room from me, when i looked over at him he was acting like he was biting his nails really exaggerating the knawing, i realized he was mocking me( in a funny way, like only Jim could do), I must have turned fire engine red, so embarressed but it cured my nail chewing. I left Troy right after that senior picture was taken, our family moved to Loma Linda. I went to Redlands High for a couple of months before I was thoroughly disgusted, took a GED test, passed it and joined the Army in December of 70. Well you know, the draft lottery was up to birthyear 1951 and I was hoping they would send me to Germany because of my age. Never did make it to Europe until 1996 on an Italy tour, loved it. I was in Vietnam by August of 71. Fortunately because of my hot rodding experience they made me into a helicopter mechanic, so that is what I did, turned wrenches etc. I was not an infantryman, I did not shoot at anybody and as far as I know I was not speciffically shot at. i have some pretty good stories from that experience although no one really wanted to hear them when I got back. Returning Vietnam veterans, well , people just did not want to think about that war or the people who were there. After Vietnam was stationed outside of Savannah, Georgia then to Ft. Bragg, N. Carolina, had a great time checking out the east coast. Left the army after three years and went to Fullerton College for a couple of years.Got married and moved to Sacramento, Cal, went to Sacramento City college and worked at Campbell's soup. We got kinda bored there so I joined the US Coast Guard and wound up i...Expand for more
n Kodiak, Alaska working as an aircraft mech and aircrew/loadmaster, flew all over Alaska on search and rescue missions/ fishing patrols, best job I've had so far. Awesome place. It is a two year tour in Kodiak and I was going to extend for another year, then my sister was adamant that I come back to LA to help our parents out because of health issues. Did not want to leave Kodiak but did, just as well I suppose because CGAS Kodiak lost a C-130 on Attu Island, Alaska that next year, I suppose I had a one in six higher probabability of dieing if I had stayed in Kodiak. Next was CGAS Los Angeles on H-52 helicopters mechanic/aircrew. Did not quite get qualified on that aircraft because my enlistment was up and we decided to leave. Went to work for Hughs Helicopters in Culver City then on to McDonnald Douglas in Long Beach, Ca. as a line mechanic. I got certified by the FAA as an aircraft mechanic. Then got laid off along with the whole second shift in Dec. of 82, that's aerospace. Got impatient looking for a job and enlisted inthe Navy as an aircraft mechanic/ aircrewman in Sept.82. Good deal, same rank (AD2) as the Coast Guard and wound up at NAS N.Island operations dept crewing C12s mostly local, mostly VIPs. Four years later I was in the SFbay area at VR55 crewing C-9s. Unfortunely the good duty caught to me and the Navy wanted to send me to the east coast with undesirable duty, I made an exit in Sept. of 90, got marriade a second time and moved back to San Diego. I had finished a Bachelors degree from San Francisco State after going to college part time on and off for years in 89. We moved onto a six acre piece of property I had bought in April 83 thirty miles from downtown San Diego. Worked for Dan Diego County Transit then Grayline Tours and finally the US Postal Service Transportation Services. Stayed in the Navy Reserves and retired from both the Postal Service and the military reserves We are still living on the six acres where I am chillin and thinking of something else to do. That's my live so far. Anyways I am trying to make this a little entertaining, after all that is what this web site is all about, curiosity, fun. I will add to this as time goes by, till next ime.
