Michael's Story
SCHOOL AND WORK
After graduating from DW. Clinton I went to City College for electrical engineering. Before and after graduating from CCNY I worked as a sales engineer. Then, being a child of the 60s, I found my work meaningless and looked for something meaninfull to do. that led me to teach, a career that lasted for 12+ years. My teaching included :
Thomas Jefferson H.S. in Brooklyn (Physics and the alternative school)
Maslow-Toffler School of Futuristic Education in Brentwood, Long Island (an alternative high school).
LaGuardia Community College (Cooperative Education Coordinator)
Suffolk County B.O.C.E.S. (electronics)
Along the way I received an MS in Counselor Education (CW Post College) and dropped out of PhD program in Educational Administration (Hofstra). Some early entrepreneurial endeavors included a tutoring agency; dealing in collectible stamps; and a dating service.
I left education in 1983 and became a technical journalist working as Sr. Editor for the Hearst Corp. I Published over 100 articles on electronic technology.
I have been founder/president of Sinotech Inc. for the past 25 years. The company manufactures custom engineered products in China. My travels include scores of trips to China.
LOCATION
In 1990 my family moved from Bayport, Long Island to Portland, Oregon. What a wonderful place to live: verdant forests, the high Cascades, ocean beaches and high deserts.
FAMILY
I married right out of college at age 21. The marriage lasted 7 years (magic number?) with no children. After five years of joyfully promiscuous single life, I met my current wife Jaimee, to whom I have been married for 34 years. Both wives happened to be NYC special education teachers working in the same school district! Maybe I'm special ed? I adopted her three children and we had a fourth, all of whom are productive adults and successful in their fields. Two grandchildren so far.
LIFE IN GENERAL
Life has been good with lots of adventure and travel. I've be...Expand for more
en able to realize almost all of my fantasies and don't have a bucket list as such. I'm enjoying my "legacy" hobbies: ham radio and stamp collecting. Uber geek hobbies. Life has also been an affluent one and I do not crave anything material. I feel like I've got it all: (mostly) happy family, big house 5 minutes from downtown, a house on the sand dunes at the Oregon Coast, daily household help, etc. I'll probably never retire since my work only takes me a few hours a day. For the past 30+ year, since I left teaching, I've worked for myself and have I've managed to be in control of what I do every day. That kind of freedom is priceless.
VOLUNTEER WORK HAS INCLUDED
President of the Northwest China Council
Director of the American Philatelic Society (30,000 stamp collecting members)
President, International Society of Guatemala Collectors
Chairman of Breakers Point Home Owners Association
Founder and Board member of Israel Advocacy Committee
Board member Portland International Philatelic Expositions
Board member and V.P. of Congregation Neveh Shalom
Board member of Congregation Kesser Israel
DEWITT CLINTON
My fondest and most emotional tie is to DWC, not any of the colleges I've attended. I cannot say enough about how being in the Scholarship Program under Dr. Bernhart has affected my life. What an incredible Classical education. A Shakespearean actor as English Teacher. Dr. David Fuchs taught me to love history. Mr. (Flash) Gordon taught me physics and then escorted us to Hunter College (now Lehman) to learn college level Physics. Mr. Brody helped me through the troubles I had with calculus. Mr. Rose, taught me chemistry, and constantly commented on my "dirty shoes". He ended up chasing me down the hallway swinging his meter stick after I openly challenged him.
DWC was only three out of my now total 70 years but it occupies a very special place in my heart.
I'd love to hear from other members of the DWC Class of '65; especially from graduates of the Scholarship School.
