Michael's Story
Life, June 2015,
Adventure is key to what drives me. After NTH and several colleges, Centralia, UW four times, Seattle U, Alaska, and several military schools; flight, and others, I went to Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot. After that I flew to El Salvador in a borrowed Luscumbe to see my brother, Greg. Hopped freight trains across the country twice and then took a bicycle ride across England, France, Spain and the USA with the woman who became my first wife at age 36. I found that I liked marriage. We built a log house on five acres in Snoqualmie, Wa. before we separated.
I ran away to Alaska after the divorce and have lived and worked there between 1982 and 2013. I met my wife of 30 years in '85 in Ketchikan. I've lived on boats since '85, one in Alaska and another in Bellingham where I can be close to my darling. Retired late 2012 from a job in the interior of Alaska, month on, month off with two ATP ratings and am just short of 16,000 flight hours. I've traveled a fair amount while chasing my family, friends, and for work. Brother Greg is back in the states after many years in Brasil, Veteran brother Rod died from agent orange years ago, I, too, had an Agent Orange cancer on my vocal cords but am fortunate to still be able to speak. Our Mum is approaching 103 and still recognises us.
I've had 23 forced landings in flying machines, been on fire twice, shot at lots, and still have all my fingers and toes but not much sanity left. The last IQ test came back posi...Expand for more
tive. I had a knee rebuilt in 95 while undergoing treatment for the cancer. I should have changed the oil and filters years ago, but like a lot of us, I never expected to live this long. Every day is a bonus.
My darling moved to Bellingham in 1999 to escape the 16 feet of rain a year in Ketchikan. 30 years we've been together and don't live under one roof. We each have our own quarters. She, her apartments, and me, my boats. The relationship has worked work well for us but is about to change since retirement forces many changes on people. This is a big deal in our future.
There is as much more to my story as there is to yours, and I'd like to hear of yours, so write me and spill some beans, life is so short that even 15 minutes with a friend is better than no time at all, and email contact will work in a pinch.
A machine I was driving was featured on the cover and centerfold of HeliopsMag.com issue 32. There is actually a photo of me in the article with another guys name attributed to the photo. I'm still playing piano, harmonica, and learning the clarinet.
In July 2013, MV Dragonfly anchored down in the folks front yard in Olympia for three months as my brother Greg and I helped move the folks off the beach and into an apartment.
Would have been there for the reunion but a friend called from Sand Pt. Alaska and asked if I'd like to help bring his Bristol Bay fishing boat from Cordova to Seattle. You know which choice I made, another grand adventure!
