Michael's Story

The photo is of me, my wife Luci, and my 17-Year old daughter Madeline in West Melbourne, Florida. My Story: The first time I met some of my CHSS classmates was at Long Acers Grammar school in 1967. I remember Mark Pizzolato, Danny Forth, Candy LiCausi, Steve Dworkin, Steve Bassett, Jim Harnish, Laurie Greenfield, Karen Detrict, and Awilda Hernandez were in my 6th grade class. Our teachers were Mr. Shats and Mr. Pine (Mr. Shats left mid year; Pine took over). Mark Pizzolato remained my best friend for years, but we lost touch when he went to Commack North, and I went to Commack South. I went on to J.F.K. Junior High School and that's where I was friends with classmates Steve Andriani, Danny Forth, Richard Spinos, and Joe Bunura (many more, but can't remember them all right now). Steve Andriani, a friend who I stayed in contact with (until his unfortunate death in 2014) was responsible for getting me interested in listening to music, which, in time, turned out to be one of my favorite hobbies. I remember being interested in learning the details of how to make sound recordings using a reel to reel tape recorder. My God Father gave me the used "Wilcox Gay" tape recorder when I was about 13 years old, so I figured I should learn to use it. I asked Steve, who road with me on the bus to J.F.K. one day, if he had the 45 record "Dizzy" which I used as a subject for my first music recording. Steve lent me the record, and then came over one day with about four albums of his. We then recorded all of the albums on the reel to reel tape. It was during these many hours we spent together recording that music where I actually took a liking to actually "listening to music". Before this I had very little interest in playing music on a stereo! In fact, I didn't even own a real "stereo" prior to this; only the reel to reel which had its own internal speakers. When my dad learned I wanted to play records, he gave me some old "tube" amplifiers he built and a Gerrard turn table. We wired it all up in a used stereo cabinet I found and that became my first stereo. Steve and I must have spent hundreds of hours playing records on it down stairs in my basement. BTW, Steve introduced me to the music of Elton John, who's songs I now love to sing to. I also sing them when doing Karaoke once in a while; my wife and I both use to sing karaoke together. Another band Steve introduced me to was "America", when he bought me the album "Horse with no name" for my 18th birthday. Ricky Spinos, another friend of mine who I knew at Long Acers, J.F.K, CHSS, and the Boy Scouts, taught me how to play guitar. I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to tell him how much I appreciated the favor. When I went into the Air Force later on in life, playing my guitar turned out to be a real benefit when it came to making friends and being popular. I remember the first song Richard tried to teach me how to play was Secret Agent Man. My second song, which I liked more, was Proud Mary. I still play guitar once in a while, but with me now being retired I have many other hobbies and ways to keep me busy. The Rock songs I like to play are songs like "Wild Horses", "Heart of Gold", "Behind Blue Eyes", and Tequila Sunrise, ECT. When I went on the Commack High School South, it was a big shock to me because the seniors actually looked like adults, though some of them were still pretty much goofy, mean, and immature. I could remember on one of my first days at CHSS, a guy named Ken Plete asked me to borrow a book of mine for a few minutes while we were hanging out in the "Dial Access" or "AV Room" in the Library (I joined the AV Squad). I...Expand for more
said "sure, you can borrow the book, just bring it back". He did, but he and his buddies sawed the book in half before he gave it back to me. I thought, "Great, l thought he was a teacher or at least a grown up". While I was at CHSS, I kind of had a growth sprit that brought me from about 4 foot 6 to 5 foot 7. At the beginning, I can remember having to play Foot Ball with some of the taller boys. God, I dreaded it! My knick-name in Gym class was "French-Fry" because I was so sort. I could remember a guy named Alan Gerossi slapping me in the face as we stood there at the Scrimmage line, just waiting to tackle me. I'm sure glad those days when I was a short guy are over. One of the activities I liked while I was at CHSS was the Model Airplane club, which was run first by Mr. Zukerman, and then by Mr. Krauz, who was my Electronics teacher. I became good friends with "Adolph" through 12th grade and afterward. I was saddened to hear that he died of pancreatic cancer years later. Mr. Tabel, my Wood Shop teacher, told me of his death a few years back over the internet and then he passed away a few years ago from complications of a fall on his driveway. I now get a lot of my CHSS classmate and teacher information through the Commack High School South Facebook page. After I graduated Hight School I went directly into the Air Force (like 5 days later) where I learned to work more with Air Force communication radios and airborne radar. I became an Airborne Navigational Systems Specialist. My favorite thing to work on was Search Radar, which looks ahead of the planes for weather conditions and aircraft. The two bases I was stationed at where Grissom AFB in Bunker Hill Indiana, and Maxwell AFB in Montgomery Alabama. I froze my ass off in Bunker Hill (near Kokamo) and decided to "swap" with a fool who lived in "Sunny" Montgomery. I know who got the better end of that deal...ME! When I got out of the Air Force, my parents lived in a One-light town in Florida called Vero Beach, AKA "Zero" beach in the late 70's. I tried like heck to get a good paying job there, but wound up having to move to Palm Bay in 1982 so I could work for the Harris Corporation. Harris has been good to me, so I've stayed working there ever since. I bought my own home in 1986 and still live there. I retired from the Harris Corporation on my 65th Birthday on July 12th of 2021. At this point in time (January, 2022) I can say I'm happily married (first time) to a very nice girl named Luci, and have a very well behaved 17 year old daughter named Madeline Rose. My wife majored in Chemistry Education, taught in a couple of schools, and just got her Masters Degree, also in Chemistry Education. Luci now teaches advanced Chemistry classes at our Melbourne High School. As far as my education goes, since my employer pays 75% for whatever undergraduate classes I take in college, I slowly worked on and finished my A.A. degree in 1989 (while I was single), but never really got "seriously" started with my BS because I'm a slow reader, and it was taking too much family time away. I have, despite of not having a BS, moved up to an Engineering job with the Harris Corporation, and considered my self to be comfortable with the salary I made there. Some of the more interesting projects I worked on was the testing of the Space Station Audio / Video Distribution System and the design and testing of the "LiveTV in Flight Entertainment System installed on Jet Blue aircraft. My hobbies right now are home improvement projects, playing guitar, building and flying model airplanes, running, bowling, canoeing, camping, and computer related stuff.
