Michael's Story

Life I met My Spouse In Medicine Hat My Kids Have a Step-daughter Natalie (1983) shes 22 I have raised her since she was 7. She lives on her own now in Medicine Hat and is going back to school to take veterinary aid. I also have two beautiful boys James (1996) and Jared(1999). My Job Been working in a Methanol Plant since I graduated from college in 1988. I work as a Lab Technician/Chemist with two others. We each rotate running the lab in a Total Team atmosphere (It helps being best of friends too). We do QC on the Methanol we do each day, we also analyze the gas streams, water treatment, cooling waters and other slip streams for chemical compositions. We also do lots of environmental monitoring for the Alberta Government on our Plant like, Stack Testing, Ground water and Volatile Organic Compound monitoring. We do quite a few other things but that's basically the gist of it. 2002 September: Now Live in Drayton Valley, Alberta bought my first acreage got hired by a head hunting firm to be Lab Manager/ Branch Manager for Environmental Oil and Gas Laboratory Newalta Corporation. Still own a few homes in Medicine Hat and Rent them out. My parents live there now so go there often to visit them. Love my job, wife and kids, life is great no complaints. 2005 Still live outside of Drayton Valley on acreage and still running Environmental and gas/oil Lab. Love to hunt fish and quad with my wife and two boy James and Jared who are now 6 and 9. If life was any better I would be in heaven! 2009. I had a ATV accident on June 21, 2008, I broke my back and am now paralyzed from the chest down. So much for the perfect life! I finally got out of the hospital early November 2008 and was able to come home. I modified my house so we still live out on acreage, put elevator, ramp from back patio, lift to front door and new large fancy wheelchair shower upstairs off my bedroom. I am very lucky as I can go back to work, 95% of people cant go back to their same job after paralysis. Since I am in management I can still do my job which is great. fied I can now go back to work in late 2009. The scariest part about this is I can no longer walk in the woods bow hunting or just going for a walk where their are no paths, that hurts me the most as I love the woods it feels like home for me. So I did the next best thing and bought a Rhino and put hand controls in it so I can at least go on trails in the bush with my wife and kids as we still love to quad. I am sure some people will think I am crazy for letting my family continue to quad because of my accident, well accidents happen and you still have to go on living you can't lock your kids in a box so they don't get hurt. I still feel I am very fortunate as I have a very loving wife and kids and family for support they are the ones that helped get me through this. I also still have a good job and I know others that have lost theirs in this recessions. I look forward to fun times with family and friends, going to go for a cruise this winter and test myself with the challenges of traveling in a wheelchair. My motto in life is to always focus on the positives and to enjoy your friends and family as you never know when one of them will pass away, and there is always someone worse off than you. March, 2011 Went on 16 day cruise from LA to Miami through Panama canal was fun, i brought my two boys, wife and my parents. We had a blast we got to miss a few weeks of winter, I think we are now hooked on cruises we will try to go on one every winter or at least somewhere warm Wife and I want to go on a Mediterranean cruise but winter time not warm enough over there so will have to do one in spring and fall. we also plan on going to Portugal as my buddy in Edmonton bought a house there and is having it modified for wheelchairs in the next month or two so looking forward to a few weeks there with wife and i and maybe buddy as it is 5 bedrooms. Got back hunting last fall and government gave me a special permit for me to use a cross bow during bow season. So at least now I can get out and do what i enjoy the most, I just have to find areas where i can get in and out of myself.
