Michael's Story

Life I AM 80 YEARS OLD AS OF SEPTEMBER 26. I RETIRED FROM GENERAL DYNAMICS (AS AN E/M LABORATORIES SUPERVISOR) AT AGE 62 AFTER 35 YEARS OF SERVICE. I HAVE LIVED IN TALLAHASSEE, FL FOR THE PAST 52 YEARS. I HAVE THREE GROWN DAUGHTERS ( THE OLDER DAUGHTERS ARE TWINS). MY WIFE AND I HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR OVER 55 YEARS AS OF AUGUST 19. I always wanted to be an Electronics specialist of some sort when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. My favorite way to relax is to go swimming, walking, or work in my yard. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a good salary, a strong belief in the company and it's agenda, and excitement about doing the job to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I've had many heroes over the years, starting with my parents and family members. Other heroes include some of the greatest scientists, teachers, and statesmen. I've lived all over the country and traveled abroad on company business and for pleasure. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Stella Yturralde- my steady girlfriend in high school, because I would love to hear about her family, and life experiences. I like college football, sports car racing, dancing, music,TV dramas, westerns, love stories, and comedies. My biggest surprise in life was when the doctor told us we were having twins ( one hour before birth). If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the upstairs portion and add on a second glass room. My dream home would be a little larger. As a parent, I've learned a lot of patience, tolerance, and respect for my children's ability to do the right thing. If I could see one of my old high school teachers again, it would be MRS Norwood, my geometry teacher. She was such a nice lady, that loved her job- you could see the sparkle in her eyes when she realized that you finally understood a point she was trying to make. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to family members, charity, schools, then spend the rest on my immediate family, world health research and improvements in new energy sources, and energy conservation. When I attended college, I never lived in a dorm, or joined a Greek System. I was too busy working in our family business, studying, and attending to other obligations. For me, being happy, is living close enough to my family and friends to be able to visit and enjoy their company. My current age is 75 When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be interesting to talk to. I was so completely right. I have worked hard all of my life, and have enjoyed many rewards, including achieving many of my asperations; however, there always seems to be something new to inspire me. It is a shame that life is too short; there are so many things yet to learn and appreciate. Everyday, I realize what a complex and beautiful world we live in. My best friend would tell you I'm an analyst, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as just a nice guy. I've always been a stylish dresser as a professional; however, when...Expand for more
I am away from work, I dress more casual. I share my home with my wife, a Cocker Spaniel and cats, which I find extremely entertaining. I do not have any trophies on my mantel. Instead, I have awards, certificates of accomplishments, momentoes, and family pictures. If I could do one thing over in my life, it would be paying closer attention to my elders. In my youth, I many times thought I new all of the answers ( youth is heavenly). As I got older, I learned that many of my elders were very wise. And, now that I'm close to the winter years of my life, I know that old age can be hell. In 10 years, I hope to be still in love with life and it's mysteries. I'm going to get there by enjoying every minute. I would consider my oldest friend to be my wife, Eugenia. I first met her at Florida State University (history class). I stopped her after class one day. We hit it off right away. The more we talked to each other, the more we realized we had a lot in common. At an Austin High School reunion, most would be surprised that I look much the same( just older ). My first job was at my fathers's TV and Radio Shop, where I got paid to clean up and learn a trade. What I remember most about it- it was a wonderful experience. I have too many childhood memories that I will never forget. One memory is the reason why I've been a life-long non-smoker. My Uncle gave me a cigar, when I was 12, he wanted me to smoke until it was as short as possible. Long before, I turned green and was very sick. I never smoked again. And now, a sad event in my life, my wife (EUGENIA EVELYN RALEY-LAFON- AGE 74) died of heart failure on 11-09-17 at 4:17 P.M. She was a loving mother of three girls ( twins, and a daughter 19 months younger). She was the love of my life, smart, funny, well educated, played the piano since she was a young girl (also played the organ). She will be forever missed by family relatives, and friends. She retired from the Florida Department of revenue after 35 years in 2004. As a family., we traveled all over the USA. We traveled to Mexico and the Bahamas. We never went to Hawaii or Alaska. For myself, I traveled on business to Germany, England , France, and Iran (six weeks). We lived in the Los Angeles area (Diamond Bar) for 6 and a half years. All three of our daughters were born in San Gabriel California. Eugenia and I, are proud of our daughters- they all graduated from Florida State University with honors. Eugenia Evelyn Raley - LaFon graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida in 1961 and went on to Florida State University. Her Year Book is part of Classmates.com. I am now 77 years old, and another sad event has taken place in my life- one of my twin daughters-Mary "Annette" LaFon passed away from stage-4 cancer on 12-9-19. She and her sisters (Tanya Suzanne, and Caroline Michelle) all graduated from Florida State University with honors, .Annette was only 55 years old. She was a Tax Examiner for the Florida Dept. of Revenue and had just celebrated her retirement. She loved all animals, and was involved in animal rescue.
