Michael's Story
Life
So what am I up to nowÂ
Well with three kids, two dogs I am certainly quite busy. Add to the mix a busy home office and you have to wonder where the time goes.
I married Katherine Emerson, who I met in University (although we did not get together until after we both graduated) and settled in the Toronto area. Eventually we migrated north of the city to Newmarket and started Âthe familyÂ. With two girls and a boy we are kept busy with girl guides, figure & syncronized skating, fencing and the like. I continue to operate a Planning Consulting company from a home office (LARKIN+Associates Planning Consultants Inc.).
Sadly, Katherine passed away in August 2006. We are adjusting to our new life but as you may imagine, she is greatly missed. The kids are doing well, or as well as could otherwise be expected, and I am trying to learn the single parent thing. She was our centre, my love, best friend, business partner, super mom, and sole mate. Words are not enough to express our sense of loss, maybe time heals, or at least dulls the pain.
School
By the time I reached St. Thomas HS I had been to eight different schools in eight years. So when given the opportunity at the end of grade 8 to move to the new Pierrefonds Comprehensive HS I thought it would be a unique experience to stay put for another year or two. My older sister Judy had gone to ST.T as well and so many of my teachers Âknew the family. My High School experience really came together in grade 11 and I have fond memories of that time, although I had no idea as to wh...Expand for more
at career I would actually follow when I Âgrew upÂ. However, following graduation the family moved to Ontario and I had to start fresh in a new High School before I could proceed to University. After becoming established in a school community it was a hard transition to make. However, I was soon on to university andÂ
College
I really didnÂt take as long to complete university as it appears. I started in Chemistry with a math option. Why? I still donÂt know the answer to that except maybe ! It wasnÂt until the end of the first semester of second year, at a party, that I discovered Planning (I always thought town planning was done by EngineersÂ
) I took two years off to see if I really wanted to be a Planner and was able to find employment in the field, ending up in Edmonton of all places. Returned to the School of Planning at Waterloo and got my degree. IÂve been Âplanning ever sinceÂ
Workplace
I have always been interested in ÂTown PlanningÂ... How cities are put together and why. My work experience has reflected my interests. When I was investigating Planning as a possible career I worked for engineering firms in Kitchener ON, Calgary and Edmonton AB. Upon the completion of my formal studies I have worked in the public sector (CMHC) and private sector as a consultant primarily in the Toronto ON area. In 1996 I established my own planning practice, LARKIN+Associates Planning Consultants Inc. With a diverse client base we provide professional planning consulting services for a wide variety of land development projects.
