Michael's Story
After the Carmelite school, I returned to my home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, finished Bishop Dwenger High School. Became proficient in French. Worked for the French Consulate for a while while living in Chicago. I was sponsored by Bishop Yaroslav Gabro of the Ukrainian Cathedral there to go to Rome to study at the Pontificia Università Urbaniana de Propaganda Fide. While there, I converted to the Russian Orthodox Church. (I couldn't get used to the Vatican II changes.) Served in the USAF in TX for three years. Married while in the service. After the service, was ordained to the priesthood in NY. taught in their high school. They sent me to Rome to serve in the Russian parish there. After a couple of years in Rome, served in Munich for half a year, and then in Copenhagen for a year. Then served 13 years in a Greek parish in Astoria, Queens, NY. In 1999, my wife took our two daughters and left me for another man, so I became a monk in a monastery in CO. Saw John Siran while there! Then, I was sent to NJ, where I still am. In 2006, I was consecrated a bishop in Suzdal, Russia. I oversee parishes in the US, Denmark, England, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Serbia, Bosnia and Bulgaria. When I became a monk, I was given the name Andrew. In 1981, I changed the spelling of my last name to Maklakov so that Russian people could pronounce it.
