Michael's Story
LIFE
My oldest daughter Heather recently graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Heather just moved to TX. Heidi my second oldest is attending community college and lives on her own. The other kids are still at home and in school, ranging in ages from 18 down to 9. I retired November 1, 2007 from the Navy after 21 years, and work for URS Corporation as a defense contractor at Commander, US Fleet Forces in Norfolk, VA.
MILITARY
I joined the Navy in 1986 after completing 2 years of school at Canisius College and getting married. The first 6 years of my career were spent in submarines as a SONAR Technician, serving aboard the fast-attack submarine USS MEMPHIS in Norfolk, VA. I did a 4 month deployment to the North Atlantic in 1990, earning my "dolphins". In 1992 the Navy decided to send me back to college. I graduated (finally!!) in 1995 with a B.S. in Chemistry. I was commissioned as an Ensign and entered flight school later that year. Unfortunately things didn't pan out for me as a pilot. In 1997 I reported as the CIC Officer to my first ship the USS GLADIATOR (MCM 11), a Minesweeper, in Texas. There I earned my SWO pin. I spent 7 months of 1999 in the Persian Gulf on board the USS DEXTROUS (MCM 13), another Minesweeper, as the Operations Officer. In 2000 I reported as the Fire Control Officer to the ...Expand for more
USS LABOON (DDG 58), an AEGIS destroyer in Norfolk, VA. I spent 3 months in the MED during my 16 month tour. I was able to take leave in France for a week and visit all the places my father had fought in WWII as paratrooper for the 101st Airborne Division. That was followed by a 17 month tour on the USS HAYLER (DD 997) as the Operations Officer. The ship participated in the continuing war against drugs in the Eastern Pacific for 3 months before being decommissioned in August of 2003. In January 2004, I returned to Texas as the Executive Officer in the USS CHIEF (MCM 14). In the spring of 2005, I deployed to the Arabian Gulf aboard the USS ARDENT (MCM 12), in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. We returned to Texas in August 2005 and re-manned the USS SENTRY (MCM 3). I was supposed to transfer in September, but was extended until February 2006. Finally returned to VA for shore duty at Commander, Naval Surface Force, Atlantic Fleet. After a short three months of enjoying shore duty I was sent on an IA (Individual Augmentee) to US Central Command in Doha, Qatar and Tampa, Florida for 7 months. I worked at the Maritime and Horn of Africa Desk in the Joint Operations Center. I returned to VA in March of 2007 and held my retirement ceremony on July 20th at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News, VA. Officially retired 1 Nov 2007.
