Michele's Story
Life
I would be surprised if many people remember me from my Mater Dei days. I was quiet and not much involved in school activities. I remember many of you with affection. I never married (also never had any kids!), but I'm a doting aunt of four nephews and three nieces. Maybe some of you remember my siblings who also went to Mater Dei -- Marianne (class of 1964), Marcia (1965), Toni (1968), and Eddy (1972). The two youngest Viviritos (Paul and Peggy) decided to go to Villa Park High School. My mom and dad are still with us and still live in Orange County. She is 83 years old, and he is 92..
After high school, I went to Cal State Fullerton and graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. I became interested in kids with speech, hearing, and learning disabilities, and I taught at Providence Speech and Hearing Center in Orange (near St. Joseph's Hospital) from 1972 to 1980.
I had classic burnout, left teaching, and in 1980 took a job as an entry-level medical writer at Allergan, a pharmaceutical company in Irvine. Allergan is famous now for Botox, but in 1980 it was best known for ophthalmic drugs and contact lens products. I was at Allerga...Expand for more
n for 16 years, the last 10 years in a dermatology division. I did both regulatory writing (reports that got sent to the FDA) and publication writing (articles in medical journals).
In 1997 I left Allergan, and Orange County, and took a job at Amgen, a biotech company in Thousand Oaks. Amgen is best known for drugs given to patients whose normal blood cell counts are drastically reduced by cancer, chemotherapy for cancer, or kidney failure. My work is rewarding but very demanding. I'm getting too old to work this hard.
I live in Camarillo with my 7-year-old Chihuahua, Peanut. If Peanut could join me in a lemon drop martini every now and then, she would be the perfect companion. Life is good in Camarillo. I have lots of friends and enjoy movies, theater, and opera with them. I love traveling and in recent years have made trips to England, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Jordan, and China. My sister, Marcia, and I made a very special trip in 2007, a European river cruise. We started on the Main River in Amsterdam, then the Rhine through Germany, then the Danube, ending our trip in Vienna.
Wishing you all well. It's hard to believe so many years have passed.
