Michelle's Story

Life After DHS, I completed a degree in business at the College of Notre Dame and entered the world of fund raising. After ten years of non-profit development work for the Baltimore Film Forum, the Walters Art Gallery and the University of Maryland Medical School, I moved to Washington state and took a break to dedicate some time to writing and figuring out what I wanted next. I freelanced for non-profits for a while, but ultimately found myself back in the "real world" and began working at the University of Washington, Bothell in May 2004. It was a VERY SMALL operation, and ultimately, I figured that working 60-70 hours every week was not what I wanted. So I quit my job in Fall 2005, and I am enjoying some time off while I job hunt. In addition to my work, I have enjoyed several wonderful volunteer experiences. I was proud to work on the DHS Alumni Association and the College of Notre Dame boards of directors, in addition to completing other volunteer work like reading to children in local medical centers, selling memberships at the Baltimore Zoo and planning grass-roots fundraising events for the American Cancer Society and America's Second Harvest. done some volunteering for the Komen Foundation in Seattle, as well as for Northwest Bookfest. Most recently, I have joined the board of a start-up nonprofit called Break Through Parent Institute. As for my personal life, I've been in love with the same man for more than ten years now. Stewart and I do not see any wedding plans or children in the near future, but you never know. We've been happily living in his hometown of Seattle since June 2002, but Stew spent the first 6+ years of our relationship in Canton. Our dear puppy (a very young 13!!) passed away in the spring of 2004 after a really wonderful and happy life on both coasts. After Honey died, I didn't Stew would ever open his heart to another dog, but we finally adopted another wonderful yellow lab in December 2005. Her name is Honey too, and she is similar to our first Honey in lots of ways. Of course, she certainly has her own personality! I hope everyone else is doing well and following their dreams, wherever they lead you! If you know of anyone else who has relocated to the Pacific Northwest or who will be traveling in the area, please drop me a line and we can try to get together.
