Mike's Story

I now live in northern Bullitt County about 5 - 10 minutes from Gethsemane. I have been with Louisville Gas & Electric Co. for 26 years now. Sixteen of those years I worked at the Cane Run Power Plant but I now work in the Safety and Technical Training dept. I still try to stay active by walking/jogging, lifting weights and practicing the Martial Arts. After 4 1/2 years I earned my 1st degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate in August of 2002 from St. Matthew's Martial Arts. I am currently looking to do some cross training in another style of Martial Arts. One day I hope to start a Ladies Self-Defense program that will visit churches and/or schools, here in Kentucky, to help train ladies in some Self Defense techniques. I have taught Karate to the children of Watson Lane Elementary School's Summer Day Camp in S.W. Jefferson Co. along with teaching Junior Achievement. In the mid-eighties, after the Ann Gottlieb disappearance, Some friends and I started a Basketball Team that raised funds for the "Exploited Children's Help Organization" (ECHO). We played such teams as Mayor Jerry Abramson with his local TV & Radio personalities, Jefferson Co. Police Dept., WAVG Radio and various church teams. We called our team the "ECHO" Shootin' Stars. I enlisted former U of L p...Expand for more
layer Phillip Bond to be our Player/Coach along with one of our Classmates, Ricky Beams, to play on the team. In 1992 I was fortunate to work with Security Personnel on a Presidential visit to Louisville by then President George H. W. Bush. I have also been a conditioning/strength coach for two local Christian H.S. Basketball teams. The schools were Calvary Holiness Christian Academy and Rolling Hills Christian Academy. I'm not sure how popular I was because I would have the boys doing Green Beret exercises that our Military uses. Needless to say, when they first started they would be sore the first few days because they were working muscles that they normally would not use but they eventually got used to it. We had three of our boys, from C.H.C.A., go to Lynchberg, Virginia, and win the National 3-on-3 tournament. My parents have both passed away, Mom in 2003 and Dad in 2005. Needless to say I miss them both very much. In early 2008 Ricky Beams, his wife, and I went to visit Mr. Luker at Parkland Baptist Church on Old Shepherdsville Rd. At first He didn't recognize us but eventually he did. It was great to see him. Our School Secretary, Wilma Hester, also attends church there. I hope to hear from some of you and maybe talk of our School days. Take care and God Bless.
