Mike's Story
After high school, I attended college at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana for two years, starting in Engineering and ending up in the Business College, although I had wanted and had applied for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Frankly, I think I should have become involved in the magnificent high school theater program, and taken four or eight English Elective courses my senior year after English 3/4 with that award winning English Teacher, Mr. Carey. Leaving college, I worked four years in Portland, Maine, 1974-1978. Moving back to the Chicago area, I lived in La Grange, Oak Park, and later in the Logan Square area of near Northwest Chicago while working in energy research and going back to college, this time at Northeastern Illinois University. Leaving Illinois for the last time in 1985, I lived and worked in Portland, Maine again for five years. In 1990, I moved to Manchester, New Hampshire to take a federal job. Over time, I ended up commuting to jobs throughout the Greater Boston area, and enjoyed most of the companies and people with ...Expand for more
whom I worked. My best job was working direct hire as a financial printing Typesetter for Chicago based R.R. Donnelley. I learned a lot about Mitt Romney type business big shots and their corporations, investment portfolios, business mergers and acquisitions, and new stock launches while producing their Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Since then, for me, it has been all customer service jobs. I am currently working as a Collections Specialist for a bank. I get to talk with people all day long, solve problems, and use all kinds of software and a greatly networked computer. Being out of work 1-1/2 years was no fun, but I have always been versatile in my employed life. As for the personal side of things, I never did get married or have children, although all my four brothers have been happily married throughout their adult lives. I enjoy seeing my nieces and nephews grow up and become responsible, productive adults. There is hope for the future. We Americans are eternal optimists, am I right? When one door closes, another always opens. Life is like that.
