Michael's Story

Life I have been married 20 wonderful years to my wife, Sheryl. We met while I was a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch. She was the wire operator who would forward trades to floor of the exchanges. We dated 3 years before tying the knot. She grew up in Las Vegas where her parents still reside. Whenever we get a knack to visit Vegas, we know there's always a room available. I have a step-son, Vincent, who is 27 and has been married 5 years to our beautiful daughter-in-law, Jenny. My grandson, Liam, will be two in July. If Sheryl has her way, the grandchildren will live with us full time! My other son, Daniel, is in 9th grade and enjoys playing football, basketball and the alto saxophone. He plans to attend USC to earn a law degree. When the time comes, I hope to attend classes with him as I have always wanted to earn a JD. When he graduates from law school, he can take over the business and I can retire and improve my golf game (I hope my retirement lasts that long!). Actually, I would like to consider public service (I've always enjoyed running for office) before I reach age 50. I hope you will get in touch should you happen across this biography. God Bless! School Having the privilege of addressing the graduating class during commencement stills ranks high as one of my all-time favorite memories. The only thing I would change about high school if I could go back would be paying closer attention to my GPA during our junior and senior years. But having a '57 Chevy at the age of 15, a busboy job at the Edward's Mansion and a fun-loving girlfriend can really distract a young man's concentration. When we graduated, I remember thinking that I would never enjoy a year of school as much as that senior year. I knew that I would never see many of our classmates ever again. I hope our 30th reunion will be as fun as the 10 year reunion, so I've made a commitment to work closely with Patty Segovia and Joyce Lara to make sure it is memorable. Isn't it amazing to think that nearly 30 years have passed since we last sang the alma mater? I'm surprised by the fact that very few people remained in the Redlands area. There was a time when the majority of Americans lived, worked, retired and died all within 50 miles of where they were born. Times have sure changed. Every time I drive into Redlands to visit my mom, I see the mountains, the tall palm trees, the orange groves an...Expand for more
d it seems as if the valley is welcoming me home. Redlands will always be my hometown. Although some day I hope to retire to a small town like Carmel, Redlands will surely be my final resting place....on this side of Heaven, at least. College The Univeristy of California, Riverside was a wonderful experience that I would not trade nor alter. Plugging back in to student government was a significant event, in that it broadened my perspective of campus life and led me to join the Kappa Alpha fratenity. Living in the dorms was absolutely great. I still miss the afternoon nap before dinner. So many fond memories. I never would have thought that I would enjoy college more than high school, but I certainly did. Afterall, we were adults, right? We had newfound freedom and we were expected to stay up until 4:00 a.m. discussing the meaning of life in the dorm hallways. We had checking accounts and paid bills. We had "over-the-hump" night ever Wednesday. I was the Backgammon Champion of Lothian dormitory (sorry Tom, Eric and Greg). We played frisbee football, ruled over A&I during Scot's Week, rocked out at The Barn, climbed up to the "C" on Box Springs hill, studied like crazy (well, at least my room-mate, Bill, did), protested against apartheid in South Africa, locked people in their dorm rooms by jamming nickels in their door, bought our first decent stereo system and dated some amazing people. Like I said, so many great memories... I don't often get a chance to visit the campus, although I always enjoy receiving the UCR Alumni magazine. The first thing I do when I receive it is look for pictures of people who attended between 1978 and 1984. It certainly isn't the tiny little campus it once was. Lothian is barely recognizable given all the remodeling and then there are all the new buildings that have sprung up in the past few years. 4 years of wonderful memories. Workplace After college: Merrill Lynch (stockbroker), Bank of America (VP, District Manager), MetLife (Area Manager), XEL Corporation (Chief Operating Officer) and currently in the process of acquiring a State Farm agency in Whittier, California. Military No military experience...knock on wood! My dad was in the Army during WWII and was captured in France by the Germans. He spent almost 2 years as a POW in a Nazi camp and nearly starved to death. He passed away on September 11, 2004 at the age of 79.
