Mike's Story

I've done a lot of things in my life so here's a quick synopsis: June 1968-Graduated from P. K. Yonge Laboratory School, Gainesville, FL. August 1968 to February 1970-Attended the University of Florida. Did a lot of goofing off, skipping class, etc. so I was suspended for poor academic performance. June 1970 to June 1974-Went to live wth my parents in Columbus, GA. Attended Columbus College (now Columbus State University) graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Crimnial Justice. April 1971 to October 1972-Worked part-time as a campus police officer at Columbus College. Attended the Police Academy in the summer of 1972. October 1972 to January 1974-worked as a police officer, Columbus Police Department, Columbus, GA. January 1974 to February 1977-Transferred to the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office, Columbus, GA where I worked as a deputy sheriff, promoted to sergeant. March to July 1977-Enlisted in the US Army. Went to basic training in A Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Basic Combat Training Brigade, Ft. Jackson, SC. Had a leg injury, sent home for 30 days medical leave, restarted basic training in May. July to August 1977-attended Basic Law Enforcement Course, US Army Military Police School, Ft McClellan, AL in D Company, 10th MP Bn. August 1977 to November 1978-Assigned to 988th MP Company, Ft Benning, GA. November 1978 to February 1980-Assigned to the 139th MP Company, Ft Benning, GA working in the Administration Section, Provost Marshal's Office. Promoted to sergeant, became Assistant NCOIC of the Admin Section. Attended Troy State University part time, earned a Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) degree in Police Administration. March 1980 to August 1980-Transferred to HHD, 231st MP Bn, Alabama Army National Guard, Opelika, AL. July 1980 to January 1985-went back to work as a deputy sheriff, Muscogee County Sheriff's Office, Columbus, GA. Used my GI Bill and attended the Woodrow WIlson College of Law, Atlanta, GA graduating with a Juris Doctor (JD) in general law in December 1984. August 1980 to January 1985-transferred to the 1156th MP Detachment (CID), Alabama Army National Guard, Montgomery, AL. Be...Expand for more
came an accredited CID Special Agent in October 1982. Volunteered to go on active duty. January 1985 to March 1990-Went back on active duty as a CID Special Agent, Sergeant E-5, at the Ft. Belvoir Field Office, 3rd Region, USACIDC, Ft. Belvoir, VA. Selected for Warrant Officer Candidate School late 1987. Promoted to Staff Sergeant E-6 the date I left for school. Completed school and promoted to Warrant Officer 1 in February 1988. Went back to Ft Belvoir, VA where I became a Team Chief. I first supervised the Drug Suppression Team for about 8 months, then the General Crimes Team for the remainder of my time. Completed a special assignment as Deputy Chief of Security, 1989 National Scout Jamboree, Ft. A. P. Hill, VA representing Major General Eugene Cromartie, the commanding general of CID, who was unable to take the position. Left the Army in 1990. May 1990 to February 1996-worked as a Probation & Parole Officer, Florida Departement of Corrections, Panama City, FL. Began teaching part time in the Criminal Justice Training Academy, Gulf Coast Community College, Panama City, FL. February 1996-July 2001-Went to work full time at Gulf Coast Community College, first as an assistant coordinator of corrections training, then assistant coordinator of law enforcement training, later becoming the coordinator of law enforcement training. July 2001 to May 2015 -hired as the Manager, Gulf Coast Criminal Justice Selection Center. I did pre-employment testing for local law enforcement agencies, academy admissions testing, fingerprinting for academy background checks, and assessments of out of state and federal officers who want to transfer to Florida and be excused from basic training. August 1999 to August 2015-enrolled at the University of West Florida working on a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree. Graduated in August 2015 with a Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Instructional Technology. Retired in May 2015. Basically goofing off, working around the house, and being more active in my church, my American Legion post, and serving as the volunteer president of a local homeless charity.
