Mike's Story
A short story of what I've been up to since finishing school.
After not being able to convince my dad to delay retirement by a year so I could graduate with everyone else, I ended up having to go to KS to do that. I knew quite a few people at Southeast from my dad having been stationed at the University in Wichita, so it wasn't too bad.
I joined the Reserves a month before graduating and went off to Ft. McClellan in '83 for basic and returned in '84 for AIT as an MP. Both times from Jun. to Aug. The humidity really made it suck, but the low crawling through sawdust 'cause you screwed something up didn't help either.
I finally had enough of school and in Mar. '87 decided I'd had enough of KS and left for active duty. Obviously, the only choice was back to Germany. So off I went to Stuttgart and the 554th MP Co until '89, after which I got sent to Sierra Army Depot and the 980th MP Co. Boy, I hated that place. In the middle of nowhere and the only fun thing to do was go to Reno, NV. From there, after catching the news about the wall coming down, I told the retention NCO Germany or bust. I found myself in the 529th MP Co in Heidelberg. Stayed there from '90 - '96. Married a German (go figure) and my oldest son was born there. Finally got tired of some of the stupid crap you find in the Army, got out and went back to KS.
I was clinically brain dead when I made that decision. Spent a few months doing nothing before going to work at the Max Confinement Facility in El Dorado, KS. That's El Doraydo, not the fabled city - I'm not that lucky. I remember sitting in training and being told that 75% of us wouldn't be here past six months and dec...Expand for more
ided right then and there that I would be in that 75%. Being a babysitter for a bunch of convicts wasn't my idea of a fun job. Sure enough, exactly 6 months later, I went to work for the Derby PD, putting people in jail and not watching them. I ended up doing that for 6 years, from '97 - '03. In that time frame, my pay didn't change much and, knowing some people in the DC area, I thought it was time to pack my bags yet again. I guess having moved so often as an Army brat, it came naturally.
I didn't get exactly what I wanted, but I went to work for the Dept. of Defense in security at Ft. Belvoir from '03 - '06. Another job I didn't like, but my pay increased by about $20000 a year and it was proving a little difficult to get a federal law enforcement job. Finally, I did, going to work as a police officer at Ft. A.P. Hill.
Ever since leaving Germany in '96, I'd been trying to get back. I went back to Aburg a number of times and took some pics when I was stationed in GE. I need to do that again, maybe take a longer look, especially when they close down Hanau High this year. Anyway, USAREUR opened up the MP desk sergeant positions here to civilians and I jumped all over that. I took a job down in Garmisch, which we thoroughly enjoyed - of course. Problem I ran into, however, is that the school only goes to the 8th grade and my oldest was going into the 9th. Lo and behold, I had to move again. The Graf PMO, which is actually in Vilseck, came to my rescue and so now I'm one of the desk sergeants here in Vilseck.
There you have it. Now you know the rest of the story. If anyone ever gets to my neck of the woods, gimme a yell. Tschuess!
