Mike's Story

Life Here's me in 50 words or less . . . yeah, riiigghhtt. Ok. Born in the military. Raised in the military. My father was a meat-head, so we moved every 3-4 years. Because we moved a lot, I never formed lasting friendships with any of my childhood friends. So, now I'm a serial axe-murderer in my spare time. Just kidding. Actually I use piano wire! Currently, I live in the frozen white north and have been for many, many, many . . . years. Actually, eons. Hang on a minute - I have to chase the bears out of the garbage again. My younger brother, Pat, and my older sister, Cathy, live here as well. They are both happily married. Me on the other hand . . . my 2nd wife left me last year so she could "live life to the fullest". But, I'm not resentful. Ok. Maybe a little. Or, a lot. Now where did I put my piano wire this time? I have five children. The oldest three have all left home. My oldest daughter just gave birth to a big (and I mean BIG) baby boy. So, now I'm a grandpa! My youngest two are swapping between staying with mom and staying with me. The break-up has been kinda hard on them. All in all, life has been pretty good (except for the crappy childhood and the crappy adulthood) - I've had many experiences, lived in many places, done many things and wished I hadn't sometimes, and met tons of good people and a few real weird ones. In the future, I plan to take steroids and get really muscular. Then, I'm going to hang around the 20-something crowd and act really cool and hook up with beautiful women. Do you think they'll mind if I take fiber pills so I can stay regular? After all, I am in my mid-40s. For work, I have fun making up numbers as a statistician. School Despite my obvious intelligence (and modesty!), I was only an apt student in the earlier grades. Even so, I managed to skip grades 6 and 10. To this day, I'm not really sure why they let me skip. I guess they figured that I had the "right stuff." HAW - I sure fooled them. Seriously, if I had to do it all over again . . . I would have studied my buns off, I would have stayed in King's Colllege (very prestigious, you know) and I would have partied with the ladies at every single opportunity. Why? Because I took life way too seriously, but not seriously enough. And, I have learned that being a good guy, a good father, a good husband, a good employee and a good citizen does NOT win you any awards. I would love to turn back the clock and hook up with all those fine, young women that I refused to do it with because I was all noble (actually, I was probably confused and scared) and didn't want to take advantage of them. Boy - was I stupid or what! For the few times I did partake, I wish I could've loosened up and asked for advice. You know . . . like; "So, where does this go?" And, I really wish I had stayed in contact with all of you fine people over the years. This is going to sound stupid, but I also wish I had expressed my gratitude to all those adults who nurtured us, taught us and protected us during our vulnerable years. To the other kind - they deserve to be strangled with piano wire. College Multiple stints of college and university. But, I never attended the computer science programs that I applied for right after I graduated. My family moved to the Yukon, and I chickened out. Now I'm a statistician and a great deal of my job involves programming. I've never recieved formal training in either field. Go figure. Originally, I trained as an automotive mechanic through the old Yukon Vocational and Technical Training Institute. I wa...Expand for more
s all of 18 years old when I started the 1-year program. I graduated with honours, but couldn't fix a car to save my life. Theory? No problem. Application? Forget about it! Eventually, I did take some more courses at the old Community Vocational Centres of Northern Alberta (now called Alberta Vocational College). However, these were mostly non-credit courses. Finally went back to university when I was 28, studying Commerce. The first year was UBC courses taught at Yukon College. The next year I went to UBC in Vancouver. I did not finish the program because my first marriage had ended, and I had to go back to work full time to pay child support. That led to a revolving door of bush, out-of-town and seasonal jobs until I finally got the computer skills I needed to land me a secure, full-time, "in Whitehorse" job. Believe it or not, the most useful training I've had was non-credit computer training offered by a for-profit company called "New Opportunities Training Corp." Once I got the training, it wasn't long before I had the job I needed and I was finally able to get shared custody of my kids. Whew! What a story! Workplace Whoa! Way too many jobs to list here. Seems like I've "done it all." It's been a very winding path to get where I am now -- Statistical Analyst with government. And, I like my job. A lot. The best job I ever had? Without a doubt, I absoloutely loved being a commercial scuba diver. Not a deep-sea diver, and not a construction diver. I was an "aquacultural harvester." I picked sea cucumbers and sea urchins for a living (but, mostly sea cucumbers). I didn't do hooka diving - no, no . . . this was all free dives with tanks and fins. Had to swim like a bugger to get the product to make the money. I was in tremendous shape, and I saw some absolutely amazing things underwater. Very, very hard on the body, though. Eventually, I had to give it up. 8 - 12 hours a day underwater at depths up to 60' can really tear up your body. The next best job? Wildland firefighting. I call it "helicopter camping." Loved that job. Got to see some amazing country, spectacular fires, beautiful wildlife . . . I was even a religious minister for awhile. Now that's a tough job!! But reallly, I just enjoy working. Always have. Always loved to work hard, and took great pride in working harder than anyone else, longer than anyone else, and doing a better job than anyone else. I was a working machine. If I had to do it all over again? I would spend more time partying, less time moralizing and (definitely) a lot more time with friends - especially the female kind. Military I wasn't enlisted, but being an army brat sort of gives me "bragging" rights. I was posted to bases in London (ON), Toronto, Chatham (NB), Greenwood (NS) and Petawawa (ON). Ok, ok . . . my Dad had the postings and I just followed. My Dad also fought in the Korean war and was posted to some other bases, but that was before my time. While in Greenwood, I attended the prestigious King's College School for Boys (now known as King's-Edgehill). Like most students, I was a member of the Black Watch Cadets, squadron #254. Led, at that time, by Major Finney. He was a really interesting and genuine man who, incidentally, fought with my Dad in the Korean war. I think I was the youngest cadet to ever achieve Master Cadet standing (I was only 10 years old when I "enlisted"). I also had the distinction of being the shortest kid in the school. That, coupled with my antisocial personality, entitled me to earn regular beatings from the other kids. That was soooo much fun!
