Mike's Story
Life
After graduating from WHS, I attended the US Coast Guard Academy, in New London, CT. Upon graduating in May, 1995, with a BS in Electrical Engineering, I was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Coast Guard, and transfered to USCGC CONIFER in San Pedro. After 2 years of working on Aids to Navigation (Buoys) I was transferred to the USCGC VASHON in Puerto Rico. While there, I served as Executive Officer in the fight against illegal drugs and migration into the US. We also performed numerous Search and Rescue cases. I graduated from the the University of Rhode Island, with my Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, in 2001. Once I finished at URI, I was stationed at the USCG Academy, teaching electrical engineering (who would have thought). While in RI, I also was a member of the local fire department, serving as training Captain, and earned my license as a Paramedic. ighting the war on drugs, and illegal migration. After 2 very busy hurricance seasons, and serveral multi-million dollar cocaine siezures, it was trime to transfer again. In July, 2006, I reported to USCG Communication Station, Kodiak, AK, to serve as the Commanding Officer. We provide high frequency voice and data communications to Coast Guard units patrolling the the Bearing Sea. We also provide distress communications to the Maritime Public. If you ever watched "The Deadliest Catch", and hear the boats calling for the Coast Guard, you can hear COMMSTA Kodiak answering the calls. You gotta love the transfer from an area where it doesn't get below 70, and you start wearing jackets when it drops below 80 to a place where it doesn't get about 70. In my spare time, I've been heading out to the local fishing holes and trying to catch some fish, as well as hanging out at the local fire house, doing the fire fighting thing again.
