Mike's Story

After Weber H.S., we moved out to Wheaton. Went to the College of DuPage for a year, then joined the Marines. Worked on A-6 Intruders, aviation electronics. Met my wife, Patricia, in New Orleans at a friends wedding. We had two boys, Nick and Tony. We lost Nick to leukemia shortly after he turned twenty-one. He blessed us though before he left, as eight months later, his son, Daniel, was born. He's now twenty. I learned how to scuba dive when I was in Okinawa. Awesome. Served eight years in the Corps, then got out and moved to Louisiana. Went to work for the Louisiana Air National Guard, avionics, on F-100's, F-4's, and F-15's. We have a new grandson, Grayson, via Tony, as of 9-29-15. I was in a dive club, The Coonass Dive Club, for quite a while, and we were all about safe diving. The oil rigs are great for diving. I've since retired from it. Once met Phillipe Taillez, the man who taught Jacques Cousteau how to dive, while at an international conference. We talked for a while, and I gave him one of our club hats. He loved our logo, a crawfish with scuba gear. Just about hurricane season... 8-2-16 After I retired, I got more active in our church. ...Expand for more
We had worked bingo for a few years early on, and our church fair, which is a big fund raiser. I drive the tractor for the kid's train ride (36 years and counting). We help maintain a section of the church cemetery that we helped build. It has two sections of two tiers and an angel each, and we keep the flowers going. It was funded by doing engraved bricks (2001). Two benches so people can sit and meditate. Then in 2011 I became a catechist by way of entrapment. I have a 7th grade class of public and private school kids on Tuesday afternoon for an hour and a quarter. It's PSR, Parish School of Religion. On Sunday, for an hour and a half, I help with two others in an HSR class, High School of Religion (9th &10th grades). It has averaged 40-50 over the five years. PSR has two days the parents can pick from, and I've had from 7 to 24 in them. There is another group that covers the 11th grade for a couple of months, and then they get Confirmed. Our church is OLPH (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) Catholic Church in Belle Chasse, LA., just outside New Orleans. Not exciting, yet very fulfilling, and it's a definite learning experience. They see to that!
