Miriam's Story

Life After graduation I attended Hendrix College and graduated from there June 1989 with a B.A. in Psychology. I immediately put this to use as a waitress. After some time I joined the Arkansas Army National Guard in 1991, became a commissioned officer in 1993. I am currently a Major, working as a staff officer with the 233rd Regiment (Regional Training Institute) at Camp Robinson. Another thing I did in '93 was apply at the Sherwood PD, where I am currently a K9 Patrol Officer. I got married in '97 to my best friend, who I met while in college. In July 2003 my life changed forever, Lauren was born. Since then I have been running around trying to keep up with my little girl. Kids are amazing!!! Such a little sponge, soaking it all up. Life is great! Workplace In April 2006 I retired from the Sherwood Police Department and went to work full time with the Arkansas Army National Guard. Currently (Feb 2007) I am assigned to work at the Joint Forces Headquarters (JFHQ) as the state’s Force Integration & Readiness Officer (FIRO). My job, well, I coordinate the equipment coming into the state, the fielding/issuing of the equipment to the units, and the training that the soldiers will need to operate the equipment. I am also responsible for the addition and removal of units around the state. I coordinate with National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C. on all of these areas and I learn something new every day. Because of this I travel a lot. I am becoming very familiar with D.C. I also travel all over the country to attend various meetings concerning the state of the Army National Guard. Just ask my family. History: I am working at the Sherwood Police Department as a K-9 Patrol Officer. My K-9 partner works to detect the odor of narcotics, as well as patrol work, he tracks and searches buildings. It is really cool working with such an intelligent partner. Those of you that remember Rebel, my Doberman during high school, will remember how smart he was. It is incredible the untapped resources that a dog possesses. ...Expand for more
Baron, my partner, won the Arkansas Region National Narcotics Detector Dog 2003 narcotics competition. He was awesome. I think he did so well because I was about 4 and a half months pregnant at the time. That was our last official duty before I took myself off of patrol and began working in the office. Update (05-2005), see my military page... Baron is retiring and I am going to be working at Camp Robinson for the next year and a half at least. Military I joined the Arkansas Army National Guard January 1991. My goal was to fly helicopters, well, I get to ride in them. I attended basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC. Learned how to work as an Air Traffic Controller for my enlisted duties, got to watch a lot of helos then at Ft. Rucker, AL. In 1992 I was selected to attend Officer Training at the Arkansas Military Academy. That was a very long year of training. It was also a lot of fun. I made a lot of good friends in OCS. I received my commission in the Army NG in 1993, and became a Signal Corps Officer, a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1998 I was selected to served as Company Commander for Company A 212th Signal BN in Hot Springs. In the summer of 2000 I was chosen to come back to OCS to work as a TAC Officer. Truely an honor, TAC Officers are to Officer Candidates like drill sergeants are to privates. I loved that job!!! Now I am working as the Assistant S-3 (training & operations officer) for the 233rd Regiment at Camp Robinson. We are the school house for the Arkansas Army National Guard & Reserves. We also train soldiers from out of state at our infantry school. I am going on active duty orders 01 June 2005 to work with the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (DCSOPS) and will be working there until Sept 2006 for sure. This is a big job, we are working on the transformation of the guard from what it is today, to the military fighting force necessary for tomorrows battle. The Army has learned a lot during our recent deployments, and we are working to make the services more adaptible to the needs of the country.
