Meredith's Story

Life Married, 3 kids and a dog. We live in Norfolk. Our daughter (who's in Middle School) plays travel soccer (we often get up to Richmond area for games and tournaments) and our oldest son (in HS) rows crew. Hubby plays ice hockey. The baby just wrecks things. MA is on hold (that baby thing) - I'm ABT (all but Thesis, though a big chunk of the research is complete). Working as an Outreach Educator for the Jamestown Yorktown Foundation. School Mrs. Hoffman, my 11th grade history teacher, instilled a love for the subject in me - though I didn't realize it until MANY years later. I really wish I had done things differently in HS, but live and learn. Had life not played out as it did, I wouldn't be blessed with my beautiful family. College I went to college right after graduating from LDHS. Unfortunately I didn't appreciate the opportunity that had been given to me. After a first semester on the Dean's List, I soon changed my major to Beer, with a minor in Partying. From there I progressed to "Knowing It All" and felt I would be much better off in the working world. Luckily, after two pretty solid careers, I figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up in my late 30's and went back to school. 4.0+ average! Can you believe it?! If ...Expand for more
you knew me in the "old days" you probably can't. I loved every minute of it. Unfortunately, I have MANY more amusing stories from So. Sem (my first foray into higher ed) than I do from TCC and ODU - though there are some. Email me - I'd love to reminisce. Workplace I spent what seemed like a short lifetime in insurance, then a 10 year career in the computer industry. I didn't finally figure out what I want to be when I grow up until I hit my 30s. Now I cannot imagine doing anything other than my current career. One good thing about figuring it out late - you sure do appreciate it more! I travel to schools all over the state with a trunk of artifacts to bring a "field-trip" to classrooms. Remember our 4th grade trip to Jamestown? Well, I'm one of the educators that backs that trip up. We present programs that are not only SOL based, but completely historically accurate based on primary source research. I would like to think that I make history fun for school kids of all ages - we teach from kindergarten to Juniors in HS. Military Does being a military wife count? My first husband was stationed on subs throughout our 10 year marriage. I probably put in more hours. We're friends now and both remarried. We're blessed with great kids.
