Monica's Story
Life
I live in Gretna, NE - half way between Lincoln & Omaha. I work in Lincoln managing the State Board of Health. I spent 13 years in the Navy, got to live in Italy & England, and travel to several countries. Received my B.S. degree from U of Maryland in 1989. I married Craig in 1993; he passed from Lewy Body Dementia. I have 5 kids: Simon graduated from UNL & lives in LA; Griffin attends college in Omaha, Aurora & Margot attend U of Nebraska-Lincoln. My brother Gary died in 2010, and I am guardian to my niece Dakota, who is a senior in high school. I like to quilt, visit area wineries, go camping, travel, and do anything that puts me in water. I was a Boy & Girl Scout leader for many years. I make it back to Minnesota about once a year, usually to visit Lisa (Lambert) Bohn.
Military

aining. I then went to a fighter squadron (VF-126) at NAS Miramar in San Diego. In Oct 85 I transferred to NAVCAMS MED in Naples, Italy. I did extensive traveling to other countries, both for fun and work. In Nov 87 I transferred to COMSTRIKFLTLANTREP EUR in London, a NATO assignment. I spent 2 years there. Finished my B.S. degree there. I got off active duty in Dec 89, and moved to Lincoln, NE to be near my sister. I joined the Navy Reserve for 4 years. Spent 6 weeks each year in either Scotland or London. Had sea duty on the USS Samuel Gompers and USS Acadia (during Desert Storm). Got out after 13 years to get married and have a family. It was all great, and I was proud to serve (and get paid to travel to almost 30 countries). I've always had some regret about getting off active duty when I did, which I guess is why as a Reservist I was gone at least 2 months of the year, plus 2 weekends per month.
