Monika's Story

July 1, 2018 - I am now officially a retired teacher. 33 years in that field. What a wild ride! I'm now going to go into life-coaching and energy work. Looking forward to a new ride with new adventures. Whahooooo!!!! July, 2011 - I was lost in time when I visited Transcona this year. I took tonnes of pictures of the old schools and neighbourhoods where I lived and roamed. It was 31 years since I was there. I'd love to go back again, but this time, have a guide as I missed out on seeing some places and had lost my memories of others. I understand now why they say you can never go home again. In some ways, I wish I had not, in many more ways, I am glad that I did. Hey, I'm an author now! The book is titled: So What'll You Have, Do or Be Hon? (Living Your Truth, Loving Yourself, Changing Your Life and the World). It's available online from Amazon, Hello! My, where has the time gone? A lot has happened over the past few decades --- some good, some great, some sad. That's just the ebb and flow of life, I suppose. I hope that friends remember me as a happy, friendly and compassionate person. Someone who possessed (and still does) a witty and off beat sense of humour. I'm sure friends would be remember me as an animal lover who enjoyed nature in all it's glory. But most of all, I hope that friends remember me fondly as one who was there for them when they needed me. I always wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were supportive no matter what I chose. I ended up working with children instead. I worked first as a teacher's aide for several years. I am now a teacher and have been for the past 20 years. I usually teach children with special needs (the range has been quite extensive), but am currently teaching a charming grade two class of kids. They keep me young, energized and amused. I've learned to be curious and see where their next "a ha" moment leads them. I have been living in Edmonton, Alberta for the past 25 years. It's a lot like Winnipeg and I feel at home here. My family moved the year that I graduated (1980) to Penticton, B.C. due to a job shortage for craftsmen like my dad, who was a self-employed carpenter. I moved to Calgary to further...Expand for more
my education in January of 1981; onto Red Deer College to become a Teacher's Assistant in special needs classrooms; and ended up at the Alberta School for the Deaf on a practicum. I enjoyed that assignment. I was fortunate enough to get a full time contract with Edmonton Public School Board that September and worked in Ritchie Junior High with hearing impaired students. I truly loved my job and decided to complete my education and get my bachelor of education degree. I worked days at the school and took night classes until I could no longer take any more evening classes. I have been employed with a number of schools teaching both special needs and regular education students. I feel lucky to be where I am, doing what I am doing. How many people love their jobs? I do! Life doesn't always turn out the way one would expect. What's been my biggest surprise? I met the man of my dreams. He was smart, funny, articulate, compassionate, easy to talk to and most every other thing one would love in a life partner. Unfortunately, that did not remain the case. My husband had a complete personality change within a few years of our marriage. He had developed OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). After several electric shock treatments to help cure the disorder, my husband's personality had drastically changed and it was no longer safe to be in the home or my marriage. In 10 years, I hope to be retired. I'm going to get there by working at a job that I love, making some investments and find a light-hearted career to enter into - perhaps doing volunteer work at the SPCA, being a comfort nurse in the IC units or what ever else my heart desires. Lately, I've discovered that I have some intuitive gifts and am an excellent conduit for healing energy, so I am considering a new business adventure in that realm as well. What about me would surprise everyone at a high school reunion? I think it would be the level of confidence I now have. I am still the kind and warm-fuzzy type of gal who left Winterpeg in 1980, but now there is a self-assurance that was not present before. I hope I come across as warm and inviting, but no longer a push-over. Well people, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hope to see you at a reunion of some sort. Ciao for now! Monika :-)
