Monte's Story
After graduating from Oroville Adult School in 1995 (I was kicked out of Prospect), I decided on a whim to attend college, if only for a few months, and if only to keep my parents distracted and fooled until I inevitably settled into my life plan of sitting around and doing nothing.
Problem was, while I had hated high school with a near-religious passion, I enjoyed my first semester of college so much that I thought I would stick with it for a while.
Eight years later, I finally decided I had had enough (for now.)
Now I am living in Anderson Valley, in a tiny hamlet about halfway between Santa Rosa and Fort Bragg, with Tara, my partner of nine years (no small feat in itself; I had never been with anyone for more than two months before her) and our daughter Maitea (pronounced My-Tay-Uh), who joined us on March 31, 2004.
Since most anyone who is reading this no doubt consumed intoxicants of some sort or another with me at some point, it is also notable that I have been sober for ten years as of April 2006. And for almost as long, I have been struggling to write a novel. It can best be described as, "Like a Schoolhouse Rock cartoon, only pornographic."
I doubt I will ever finish it, but like Richard Dreyfuss said in Mr. Holland's Opus, "I pick ...Expand for more
at it sometimes."
I have worked various odd jobs over the years (librarian, janitor, bookseller, group home counselor), but finally settled down into a career. I have become, of all things, a teacher. Many of my own former teachers would no doubt gasp or roll their eyes if they heard. It is very strange to be a figure of authority when you spent most of your life rebelling against authority.
Even though I did not succeed at Prospect, I am grateful for my time there; I would not have made it through Adult School without the credits I earned at Prospect, and I would not have likely survived some of my darker periods without the support and encouragement of the staff, and that of my friends and fellow students.
High school now seems to me like a strange, vague dream, or memories of someone else's life. I cannot believe it has been over ten years, but on the other hand it seems like it has been more like twenty.
Anyway.
I can be reached at williamsmonte at yahoo dot com if anyone wants to wax nostalgic.
Cheers,
-Monte Williams
UPDATE: September 22, 2011
I am living and teaching in Lahore, Pakistan. Tara and I are still together. Our daughter is seven-and-a-half.
Also, no one uses Classmates anymore. That said, I don't have a FaceBook. Sorry.
