Moreen's Story
College
After graduating from NJC and earning my Associates in Science,in 1966, I attended Suffolk University where I earned my BA in 1968. From there I attended the University of Illinois at Champaign, Urbana and earned an MSW in 1970. I practiced social work in Boston where I worked at City Missionary Society on Beacon Street. I became an activist in the Black community and was an advocate for change. After practicing social work from 1970 to 1975 and serving as President of the Greater Boston Association of Black social Workers and on the National Steering Committee of Black Social Workers, I stopped and listened long enough to realize that I was burnt out and had changed very little. Philosophical questions became intrusive. I took time out and returned to Barbados to reflect, traveled extensively in the Region, roaming the beaches and enjoying life and love, for the first time. I returned to Boston in 1976, pursued my PhD in Medical Sociology at BU. I was a Teaching Fellow at BU, taught part time at Salem State Colleg...Expand for more
e and Brandeis University. In 1979, I was named Honorary Vice Consul of Barbados to Boston by the Govt. of Barbados. I graduated from BU in 1981,and left the US again for a brief stint ILO's Caribbean Regional Office, in Trinidad, as an External Collaborator. Got a chance to travel more. I returned to Boston in 1982 and was recruited as an Assistant Professor by Trenton State College to teach in its Sociology Department for a year. I was hired by the NJ Department of Corrections as Deputy Chief of the Correctional Officers Training Academy where I worked from 1983 until 1987 when I was recruited by the University of the West Indies' Cave Hill Campus to establish and head its Certificate in Social Work Program. I lived there until 2002 before returning to the States to find an agent. I returned to Trenton NJ where I am an Adjunct Prof at Rider University; and a research scientist with the State of NJ. End of story, truncated and boring though it be... I have been busy. Slowing down to address love issues. Imagine that.
