Overcoming obstacles is an everyday occurrence for President and CEO of TCS Associates, Myrna Orleck-Aiello. Myrna truly represents ¿signs of success¿ for diversity in the workplace by showing the world that success is possible for all people, and that Women truly make outstanding entrepreneurs. When people think of diversity in the workplace, they don¿t always think of employers with hearing losses. As a result from a severe case of German Measles, Myrna became Deaf at the age of 3. As tough as her childhood and adolescent years were, she tried not to let her disability discourage her from doing anything that her peers did. One year after graduating from college Myrna¿s dream came true. In 1982 Myrna and her husband Phil (also deaf) established a company called TCS Associates, and with Myrna assuming 100% ownership she embraced the CEO position she always dreamed of. What started as a small husband and wife corner repair shop barely making ends meet, has now become an established corporation that provides assistive technology and communication solutions for people with disabilities. In 2000 Myrna became the first Deaf woman to obtain Section 8(a) certification status in the nation. on the opportunity to provide products and services to other disabled workers. Given the current U.S legislation regarding equal opportunities and accommodations for people with disabilities, TCS has been able to achieve its primary goal to make the workplace equally accessible for people with disabilities. TCS has improved the productivity and lives of countless amounts of hard of hearing, deaf, low-vision, blind, and cognitively/physically impaired individuals. If there is anyone that understands the everyday struggles and frustration of having a disability and trying to function in the work place just as well as anyone else, it is Myrna. This understanding is what fueled Myrna¿s drive to pursue the Assistive Technology field which she has now been successfully providing for people with disabilities employed by the Federal Government as well as many other large organizations nationwide. TCS Associates also provides Communication Solutions (Interpreting and Captioning) for the deaf and deaf/blind, another vital component for disabled individuals to achieve equality in the workplace. Not many Deaf owned businesses, let alone Deaf, Women Owned Businesses compete in the information technology sector, but Myrna¿s hard work and dedication has made TCS the exception. She attributes her professional success to her unwavering passion for the field, and her impenetrable attitude that being disabled does not stand in the way of success. Myrna built this company from the ground up 27 years ago and since has become a pioneer in both the IT and disabled communities, paving a trail in uncharted territory for other women entrepreneurs can follow. She is living proof that with the right motivation, skills, and implementation, anything is possible.
