Nance's Story

College When I left the little town of Gig Harbor; I moved to Takoma Park, Maryland and lived in Longbranch Apts. (there is some pattern here.....)I worked at Holy Cross Hospital for many years and sometime during that time I started taking RN Nursing courses at Montgomery College and Univ. of Maryland. I also was a member of Wheaton Vol. Rescue Squad; (the first female qualified in Montgomery Co, Md. to function on the HD Rescue Equipment). I went to EMT and Paramedic Training at the MC Fire/Rescue Training Academy also. What a great life. All that time, raising my two wonderful kids and getting the most mileage out of life that I could. I "came to an awakening in the late l970's and moved my kids and myself back to good old Gig Harbor. I was so very sad to leave Wheaton, but I wanted my kids to have a taste of the way that I grew up. I finished my Nursing studies at TCC and graduated (on crutches) with a couple of AA and Lib Arts Degrees. Geez; that was just the mid of my life......more would be revealed. Workplace I walked into Holy Cross Hospital; I did not know ANYONE nor did I have any education (except for Peninsula High School). I applied for a job; thinking I would be happy with just washing floors or something; and to my surprise I got a job as a Unit Secret...Expand for more
ary on the Surgical Floor. I loved it; from there I went to work in the Emergency Room as a Unit Clerk doing admissions and I fell in love with ER work. I joined the Rescue Squad, became a Tech and changed my job to ER tech. I finished my Nurses's training and ended up STARTING my career in the Coronary Care Unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma, Wa. Most of my Nursing Career has been spent in ER and ICU and CCU settings. I did some supervisory work in a nursing home ONCE (!!). in 1983 I got an injury on the job and that is when my "working" ended. But NOT my love of Nursing nor my experience in the Nursing/Medical field. I am still usually the first one that anyone calls when there is a problem!! (not much has changed in forty years!) I have kept up with most of my skills but I made a left turn and now enjoy retirement and selling antiques through our business Nance's Nostalgia. The underlying theme throughout my life tho; is my kids and now their kids. I do not consider it "work"; but I have clocked in thousands of hours as a Grandparent; doing the full scale of things for as many of them as I can. I would love to hear from any of my ole' classmates and workmates. Drop me an email.....life is great but I am getting older! and want to keep those good memories around!!!
