Nancy's Story

While I've had several careers in the last fifty years, raising our four sons was the most fun and certainly the most rewarding one. Thomas, Philip, James and Casey began arriving after five years of teaching elementary school in CA. We were a built in team and resource for each other, their closeness today attests to that. When they were all in school in Newport Beach, CA, I enrolled in Orange Coast College to study photography and writing. The former had always been a love of mine, following in my dad's footsteps, and I threw myself into it. I applied for a job with a successful female photographer in Newport and eventually left her and went into my own business of wedding and family photography. Philip suggested the name PHOTOGRAPHUS and it worked. I never advertised, just went by word of mouth from one client to another, and gained a reputation for black and white bound books of children and families.I'd seen Richard Avedon's books, done in this manner, and just had fun with "A Day in the Life of "whomever". This coverage of weddings and children continued with a move to Jackson Hole, Wy and fantastic scenery for a background. Brides and grooms on skiis, mountain weddings and children in sports kept me very busy, when I wasn't Xcountry skiing or hiking. Writing about chil...Expand for more
dren's events began with a move to Santa Barbara County, and I covered these in the Santa Barbara News Press and Carpinteria Coastal View. Then I just naturally fell into writing stories for elementary children, which is my life today. Having written about the last family owned Dory Fleet in the United States for a final at OCC, in previous years, I decided to compile facts and my photos and self published Hooked on the Sea in 2008 with Xlibris. Being a regional story about this group of fishermen and their wives still holding fort on the beach in Newport, it has been successfully received by schools, libraries and other groups in that area. I continue to drive down to give talks about this now declared Historical Site whenever asked. Now, following extremely successful recent back surgery in October, I am back on my feet and my computer rewriting and submitting my children's stories and poems. Unfortunately, I lost my wonderful Irish husband two years ago, and if it weren't for trips with our sons, their wives and my writing, I'd be lost. I've had a great life, can't ask for much more! (Would like to find that email on my computer that says, "We like your story, let's talk". My theory has always been, cream rises to the top, I'm working on it.) Nancy B. O'Connor
