Nancy's Story
BRIEF CHRONOLOGY: After two years at CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL (57-59), our family moved to Johnson County. I finished the last two years at SHAWNEE MISSION EAST HIGH SCHOOL (59-61). After graduation, I attended UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS for two years as a music major, dropped out, worked for two years, went back to school at UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI -KANSAS CITY, worked while attending classes, finally got degreed (in Sociology) in December 1973, went to grad school at UMKC for 3 semesters, then UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO - BOULDER for 2 semesters. Left Boulder, went to New York, stayed for 12 years working at 1) ESTEE LAUDER, 2) CITICORP, and 3) EMPIRE BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD. My mother got sick in 1988, so I came home to help take care of her. KC employers wouldn't even look at me with my NY resume, so I became self-employed.
BEST ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: Co-authored (with Florine Jackson) a paper accepted for presentation at the International Sociological Society in Toronto 1974: "The Real Estate Broker and Residential Segregation".
MOST UNUSUAL JOB: Teaching ballroom dancing for ARTHUR MURRAY.
MOST FUN JOB: Working the concession stand at the ROCKHILL ART THEATRE while attending UMKC.
MOST GLAMOROUS JOB: Definitely ESTEE LAUDER. My first management job, my first New York job, my first job with a private office, a title (National Consumer Relations Manager), and a secretary. I felt like Melanie Griffith in the final scene of "Working Girl" in my tiny office on the 30th floor of the General Motors Building looking out on the 59th Street Bridge.
WORST JOB: Worst people I ever met: CITICORP -- and they obviously haven't changed! Inside joke from 1980: Citicorp CEO wanted to hire a new CPA firm for the bank. CEO calls in heads of all the top accounting firms and interviews each privately. After talking with several of them, he emerges from his office shaking hands ...Expand for more
with head of "Peat Anderson Ross". Exec in next office asks CEO how he made the decision so quickly. CEO answers, "I asked them all the same question but only one had the right answer." Next-door exec says, "What was the question and what was the answer?" CEO says, "The question was 'What's 2 plus 2?' and only the "Peat Anderson Ross" guy said 'What number did you have in mind, sir?'"
BEST CAREER BUILDING JOB: Six years at MOBIL OIL CORPORATION Credit Card Division in Kansas City. Among the first group of women hired as Credit Representatives in 1968, I went on to Customer Relations and made contacts with Mobil's Customer Relations people in New York. Even though I did not end up working for them, the experience I gained in six years there led to the job at Estee Lauder.
LAST CORPORATE JOB: During my last 5 years in New York, I worked for EMPIRE BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD, managing a telephone claims service department and later recruiting physicians for an HMO.
WILDEST ESCAPADE: I once went on vacation for two weeks with $50 in my pocket by hitching rides on private airplanes.
SCARIEST DECISION: Moving to New York, alone, divorced, and recovering from cancer at age 31.
SMARTEST DECISION: Taking a friend's advice to "buy one of those new home computers" in 1984.
MOST ENTREPRENEURIAL WORK: Between 1993 and 2009, bought, remodeled, and sold 6 houses/condos, all for a profit until the last one!!
MOST FUN ACTIVITY IN NEW YORK: Going to the theatre - I donated all my collected Playbills from 1966 through 1988 to Johnson County Community College's Theatre Department several years ago.
MOST FUN ACTIVITY NOW: Finding good wine for less than $8 a bottle, and pairing it with the right foods.
MARRIAGES: Two
CHILDREN: None
CURRENTLY WORKING ON: Free-lance bookkeeping clients, the Shawnee Mission East reunion, genealogy, and especially living well on less.
