Nancy's Story

Life I got a BA in French and English from Wartburg College, Waverly Iowa (spent time studying and travelling in France). I graduated in 1977. I did substitute teaching in the Appleton area after I graduated from college. I taught French and English and worked as assistant drama and forensics coach at Luther High School South, Chicago Illinois 1978 - 1980. Notable Luther South alumni include Olympic triple-jump gold-medalist Mike Conley, Sr., and his younger brother, Steve Conley, a former NFL linebacker; rap artist Common; and Dr. Valerie Roberson, former president of Olive-Harvey College who now leads Roxbury Community College in Boston. I left to teach at Iowa State University but lack of courses forced me to supplement my income and eventually I quit teaching to work full-time as an assistant manager in banquet services at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa 1980-1983. I decided to get an MBA in Accounting/Finance from Washington University in St. Louis Missouri; finished it in 1985. I went to work for Xerox Corp. in suburbs around Rochester New York. The Rochester area is very beautiful, next to Lake Ontario and not far from the Finger Lakes. I had many jobs from financial analyst to financial planning and analysis manager 1985 - 2001. I went to work for Genencor, a divison of Danisco, as Senior Division Analyst. My firm was purchased in 2005 by a firm that was a long-time majority stockholder and that firm was purchased by DuPont after that. My position was eliminated in September 2008. I consulted for the next 9 years and had a lot of different and interesting projects. I was able to balance working with taking time to care for my mother-in-law and sister. In late 2017, one of my clients, in the midst of an asset sale for which I was doing the due diligence, asked me to join the new firm as their Controller and HR Manager. So officially as of February 2018, I work for Cognivue, Inc. The firm designs and sells a computerized test for cognition that was cleared by the FDA to test for dementia. My dad passed away in 2014 from dementia so it's an issue close to my heart. Right now we are in 6 test markets and working with several large hospital systems and employ...Expand for more
ers to use the machine instead of or in addition to the current paper tests such as SLUMS or Mini-Mental (MMSE). I'm very happy with the people, the product and the work I'm doing. I am married and have a daughter. In high school she was into drama (acting but mostly tech side) and sports - she played travel softball and softball for school and LOVES the YANKEES. I enjoy hockey but neither my husband or I are very athletic so it must be a dormant gene! She graduated from high school in 2012 and Champlain College in 2016 in Burlington Vermont with a degree in early childhood/elementary ed. She is still living there while working as lead teacher in a YMCA childcare program at the University of Vermont Medical Center. My husband and I love the Burlington area. We built a home with an in-law suite for my husband's parents in 2000. My father-in-law passed away in 2004 and my mother-in-law in May of 2011. My sister, Mariah, who graduated from West high school in 1976 (her birth name Mary), moved in with us only to find that her rare form of ovarian cancer - granulosa cell tumor - had come out of recession. She passed away in November 2011. We sold that home and moved to a townhouse in another suburb just north of where we were before. So we're living the life of empty nesters. My husband retired in 2017, and I'm still working so we travel when we can. Our last big trip was in 2015 to visit our daughter when she was studying in Dublin Ireland. My husband had never been overseas so it was a fun trip. He keeps threatening to move there. Once I retire too, who knows? I was treasurer (volunteer) for the Fairport Softball Booster Club and Team Mom for my daughter's travel softball team Rochester Lady Lions. I have volunteered for other non-profits (Treasurer for Penfield Symphony Orchestra, fund-raising co-chair for Fairport Area Branch AAUW, HOPE, etc.) I enjoy the Rochester area for its many similarities to Wisconsin (lakes, rivers, green farmland and friendly people)! My sister moved to this area in the fall of 2009 to do a Master's in Acupuncture at NY Chiropractic College. She loved the area too. I have profiles on LinkedIn and Facebook (as Nancy Jo Peterson).
