Nancy's Story

Life To back up a bit, in high school I was in the Band and the Chorus (alto section). My best friends were Marie Kadlec and Lora Dihrberg. Well, after high school, I spent 3 years at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC earning a 2-year degree in Interior Design. I went to work for a wallpaper showroom, then Pergament's, then back to the showroom. I spent the summer of 1974 living at Lora's house and generally raising hell. Then I became a school bus driver, and cocktail waitress at Centereach Lanes. I enlisted the Air Force in 1976, and was sent to San Antonio, TX for Basic Training. Then off to Biloxi, MS for technical school, where I was trained as an Airborne Communications Systems specialist, and played in the Keesler AFB Marching Band. My first assignment was at Hickam AFB in Hawaii (tough duty!). After 2 years, I had the opportunity to work on my Bachelors Degree and get a commission. So I got out of the AF and attended Chaminade University of Honolulu, earning a degree in Business Administration. Back to the AF, where I was sent to Andrews AFB, MD and worked in administration. Boring! I asked to become an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, and was sent to school in Rantoul, IL - Chanute AFB. Subsequently went to Omaha to work in a squadron maintaining RC-and EC-135 aircraft, (reconnaisance and Looking Glass) and the E-4, which was the President's Airborne Command Post. Tired of Midwest winters and summers, my next location was near Madrid, Spain, in a maintenance squadron for F-16 fighters. I progressed there to the Chief of Maintenance staff and ran the training division for the region. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel for business to Germany, Greece, Italy and Turkey. 3 years later, back to the US and an assignment to Warner-Robins AFB, just south of Macon, GA. The wing consisted of KC-135 refueling tankers. While there, I headed the Maintenance Control Division, Logistics Division and the Quality Assurance Division. The work was goo...Expand for more
d, but the weather sucked. Three sweaty, buggy years later, I lucked out and got an assignment at HQ AF Space Command in Colorado Springs, CO, where I ran the GPS User equipment program. I retired in 1994 (Yay!). I decided to stay in Colorado (the only thing that's missing is the ocean). I bought 35 acres in the mountains and started building an Earthship (an alternative style home built from tires and completely off the grid), while attending herb school at the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies. Got my CO in 1996, my certification in 1997. Worked for a casino in Cripple Creek as an accountant until I decided to run for County Treasurer. I lost, but it was a great experience! Started my herbal consultation business, too, but it never really made enough to sustain me. I had to get a full-time job in Colorado Springs, and ended up moving there in 2000. Civilization! Now I work in administration for a small civil engineering company just a mile and a half from my home. In my free time I like to garden (some would call it terraforming!), go to concerts and movies, remodel, knit, read, etc. I am the President of the local chapter of NOW, and an active member of the Democratic Party. I am so excited that the convention will be held in Denver in '08, and hope to be able to attend. My youngest brother, John, lives here in Colorado Springs, where he has his own flooring installation business, and plays keyboard for at least 3 bands. I go to see him play whenever I can. My other brother, David, lived in Colorado for quite some time. He came down with MS, and passed away in November, 2005. One of my sisters, Terry, has lived in Boulder for over 30 years - I guess that is the reason I first wanted to move here. My two other sisters still live on Long Island - Shoreham and Riverhead. My mom, still going strong at 92, lives in Riverhead, too. My dad passed away in 1992. All told, there are 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grand children in the family.
