Naomi's Story

Life After graduating from THS, I attended Cal Baptist University in Riverside. I graduated CBU in May 2003 with a BA in English and minor in Journalism, and then entered the secondary teaching credential program there the next fall. However, I chose to take a break from the program to get married August 21, 2004 and move to Sicily with my husband, who was stationed in the Navy there. Not a bad place to spend our first year of marriage! I've done a lot of sightseeing and writing, and now we're in Texas living the family life. Our son was born in August and between him and going to school part time, I'm keeping pretty busy until I can start teaching next year...and then I'll be even busier! School I was so shy growing up, and in some ways I wish I could go back and do it all over SO MUCH BETTER now. But it wasn't so bad. Academics was my thing, partly because my parents didn't really want anything else to be my thing, so I always had good grades. And all of my Honors English teachers at THS helped to make me the lover of literature, research, and writing that I am today. Thanks Mr. Hansen (yearbook!!), Mrs. Wahlstrom (20 minute writings--brilliant), Ms. Teague (who first introduced me to my now favorite writer, Ralph Waldo Emerson), and even scary Mr. Richards (who wouldn't be scary at all now). College I chose to attend CBU because it was the school my church supported, and I already knew several students there. It's good that I started off with a small Christian university, because I was so shy and needed a "safe" place to stretch my wings and figure out who I was. Interestingly enough, attending a Baptist university made me realize I didn't want to be a Baptist. I'm a Christian, but I don't believe in denomination, and I'd choose God over religion any day. I probably could have transferred to a "better" school, but the classes I took for my...Expand for more
degree, esp. research and writing classes, were actually quite challenging and rewarding. However, I'm glad I left before finishing my credential there. I love California, but teaching requirements are always changing! When we move to Texas to my husband's next Navy base, I'll have a much better opportunity to finish my credential and begin teaching right away, as teachers are in HIGH demand there. Workplace My parents didn't want me to work in high school, but I got a job anyway after getting accepted to the Sierra 49ers scholarship program at Sierra National Bank. I only earned one of the small scholarships, but then they hired me part time the rest of my senior year, and full time the summer after graduation. So I got a lot more out of that program than just a $250 scholarship! All through college I worked in the campus library, first at the front desk, and then as an assistant to the Periodicals Librarian. Not a thrilling job, but good for an English major with lots of research to do. I also had a brief job at See's Candies in the mall somewhere in there, but despite the free chocolate, it wasn't great. After I earned my BA, I started substitute teaching in middle and high schools. Scary at first, then a breeze once I figured out how to enforce the rules but still be "the cool sub." I can't wait to get an actual teaching job, though I always plan to write too, whether I get published or not. Military I'm not in the military, and that's definitely one organization I'll never join. But my husband is a second class Navy air traffic controller, and I'll never regret spending our first year of marriage in Sicily as a Navy wife. I didn't spend a lot of time gossiping with the other Navy wives, though. I spent more time with our Italian landlord and his family, learning the language and culture, and learning to cook some amazing Sicilian meals.
