Natalie's Story

My goodness, where do I begin? Left SLO after Mission High and attended Business College in Oakland earning a Secretarial Degree. I attended school every day, rode the bus home, and worked until 9 PM every night in an Italian bakery to pay tuition. The wages weren't too good, but the pies I brought home were outstanding! After graduating Business College, I worked for Safeway Administrative Offices in Oakland until I moved back to SM, happily married to Marcos Vasquez with three wonderful kids. In the summer, I decided to try for unemployment so I could stay home with kids, but that wasn't to be because AHC hired me as secretary to one of their administrators to begin in Fall of '62. At that time, the high school district and AHC were one district, so when the new ERHS principal, Clark Miller, needed help I said OK since I wasn't scheduled to begin working at AHC until the fall. First day on the job, Clark asked me to stay and be HIS secretary! And together we opened ERHS in the Fall of '62, but it had to be on double session at SMHS since the Righetti buildings weren't completed. We moved into a partially built school on Foster Road in the Spring of '63 with sand getting into my typewriter because the lawn wasn't planted yet! (Yes, we did use typewriters way back then.) But it was great fun being part of a new school, working with Clark and a great staff. Divorced in 1968., but I was happy raising my three bambinos: Linda, Marcos, and Joey. That same year, I was promoted to Secretary to the Superintendent of the High School District, learning a great deal of the educational system and wor...Expand for more
king with Board of Trustees. Also loved teaching shorthand nights at AHC while it was still being used by secretaries! I don't think too many people even know what shorthand is these days! In 1974 married Righetti's awesome art teacher, Doug Halvorsen, and we have a beautiful daughter, a third generation teacher! Doug was a beloved teacher, and coached cross country and wrestling. He was the ERHS Athletic Director for a few years and enjoyed great rapport with students, parents and staff. Doug was ordained a Deacon of the LA Diocese and he ministered at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church in Orcutt. We loved our ministry together! He was asked to marry couples who were former students, and baptized dozens of babies! I joined him in ministry, taking on the task of Wedding Coordinator for a few years. The years have been good to us, blessing us with grandchildren and even great grandchildren. But in 2020, I lost the love of my life, Doug, and two months later, my oldest son, Marcos. I couldn't bear staying in our huge home by my lonesome, so I downsized to a smaller house, where I reside with my little puppy, Louie! One of my daughters lives on the island of Maui with her daughters. One daughter is married with two girls and an adorable six-month old boy! She has asked me to go live with her on the island which I love visiting, but at this time, I think I'll stay in SM. My second daughter has two girls attending ERHS, both very involved in water sports. The eldest earned a scholarship to UCSB and will attend in the Fall! Her highest GPA was 4.5 so there were quite a few colleges after her.
