Nick's Story

Hello fellow schoolmates , Its been almost 19 years since we left the hallowed halls of the "green jail" on Ashton St. Times have surely changed. Strange to look around and realize that we are all very much adults now. Middle age is creeping in but luckily the hairline is still intact. So what's new on my front? I have traveled alot, seen a good chunk of the world. I went to SFSU for a degree in Anthropology/Archaeology with a minor in History. I tried to do the graduate school thing but 16 years in a classroom plus flight school really was enough for me. My education did enable me to work in Russia excavating Viking settlements. I also spent a few years in the Vologda province excavating a 13th century island monastery. My claim to fame is that I got to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. About 10 years ago I also earned a commercial pilot's license but the tragedy of 9/11/01 really prevented me from going further in a career in professional aviation. I am trying to make a comeback into flying, at least on the teaching and instruction level. As much as I love archaeology and science my true calling is aviation. Always loved it. I have been married for a few years now to the absolute love of my life. Her name is Tanya. We met at UC Berkeley a few years back. No kids yet, but we plan on it. She is an architect and an amazing artist. For all of you out here who remember me as being a car nut, ( high schoo...Expand for more
l and elementary) and your 1989 Yearbook will drive the point home, Im the guy with the 1957 Plymouth Fury. I am still very much a car nut. Actually its a passion Tanya and I both share. We have two restored 1960s era Muscle cars and two vintage Porsches, one which needs full restoration. We also love old wooden sailboats and antique houses. We are currently restoring our art deco ( 1937) era house to full historical accuracy. What can I say, times change but the geek factor remains the same. We are avid hikers, campers and travelers. We are also fanatical canoers and kayakers and pretty much spend anytime we can in the great outdoors. On top of a mountain or at the bottom of some canyon is where we are happiest. No complaints, life has been good to me. I may not have become famous or ultra wealthy but I have to say I am more than contet with my little place in this world. There is still time for wealth and fame.I did my time in the dotcoms of the late 90s but it only served to reinforce to me that cubicle life is NOT for me. On a fun note Tanya and I live close to the Green Jail on Ashton. Also pretty close to STM. I can actually see the old Wildshaw out of my window, there in the foggy distance as I type this. Its beige these days and Mr Ed and company have long since moved on but the building and memories still live just past my bedroom window. Hope you are all doing well. Sincerely, Nick Shebalin
