More about Nick:"In loving memory of every cancer patient, family member, and friend who has lost their battle with cancer, and those who continue to conquer it. Place this on your page for 1 hour if you know someone who had or has had cancer. Many will copy and paste i have 2 older sisters Pam and Angie . I live w/ my dad but see my mom when i can. i'm a 17 year cancer survivor. this is a story i wrote about me. My Life There are many things in this world that I disagree with, like cancer. I have been through this awful disease with my family, and their lives have been changed by it. I have to do things differently than most people because of my brain tumor, which gave me many disabilities. This has made my life difficult in school, work, and living on my own. I cannot do many of the regular activities most people can do. I appreciate every day with several obstacles in my life that I fought through and still fighting. I enjoy helping people by making them smile, laugh and become friends. Try to help people understand how precious life really is because it can be taken away in a second that why I try to enjoy every second I can. I have lost many of my family and friends through cancer. I have had three surgeries throughout my young life. The first one was when I was four years old. My parents brought me to the doctors. My doctors found a brain tumor in my optic nerve called Pilocytic Astrocytoma. During the surgery they could only take out some of it, because it might have made me blind if they removed the whole tumor. The tumor is on my optic nerve, which gives me vision impairment. My blind spots in my right eye are, in front of me and to the left. While the left eye is not able see to the right. So basically, I only have one eye. While having learning, reading, comprehending, memory, and more disabilities because of the tumor. My second surgery was when I was in elementary school in fourth grade. I had a cyst on my tumor that was getting large. A cyst is a liquid that has nowhere to drain so it forms into a cyst. My third surgery was in December of 2011. I had this one for a couple of reasons, because I was having extremely terrible headaches with dizziness for a few years. I went through many different kinds of medications and met several doctors that did not help. Finally three years later, I had another brain surgery cyst grew back. The doctors and I hoped this will be the solution for my headaches will stop after the surgery. I was feeling better for a few weeks after my surgery. While my eyes started to hurt again around February. I had numerous doctor appointments over several months. Sometime over Septemb...Expand for more
er, my doctors told my dad and I my Pilocytic Astrocytoma is growing slowly again. We discussed having chemotherapy. We found a doctor in Londonderry to start the chemotherapy in late September, we discussed around a year. I am doing the best I can, while going through chemo, going to college, working and doing Relay for Life. One of the many reasons why I am strong each day is because of my wonderful family. They take care of me and I love them so much. My two sisters have helped me tremendously over the years, although they tag team and tease me. I live with my father and see my mother when I can. My father has done so much for me; he fights every day for me. For example, he has fought for me through every school I’ve been to. He talked to each principal about what I needed, even though the schools didn’t help me to be successful. He fought for me to get help that I needed, during school years. Thanks to my father I got some of the help I needed. He’s taught me how to cook and do many other necessary things to become an adult. My wonderful mother has also done so much for me. We have a special bond, more than just being mother and son. During my treatment when I was four my mom started to have headaches. We think that her headaches were mine. I have also been volunteering since middle school starting with City Year Young Heroes. To Mayors Youth Advisor Council (MYAC), while I was in high school I started doing American Cancer Society Relay for life and still doing it. During high school I did National Honors Society and received some awards. I was in City Year Young Heroes for five years It was, a fun and rewarding enjoyable memories. I went around the community to clean by picking up trash, painting walls and much more. Then I got to be a team leader. We taught kids about important issues like hungry and homelessness and many more. I learned a lot and made many friends and still friends today. I figured out I like teaching and helping kids. While I was doing Young Heroes I applied for Youth Advisory Council. MYAC is a group of high school students who attend meetings with city leaders representing the city of Manchester. We represented the youth in local government and in Washington, D.C., by solving school and city issues. It was an interesting and fulfilling time over the years. I met many people around Manchester and still in touch with them. In freshmen or sophomore in high school I met my best friend and my hero. She also had cancer, she had lung cancer. She was going through treatment. We instantly became friends and we hung out all the time. Her friends started a relay for life team and I joined I t was so much fun. Sadly she passed away that summer. She is the reason why I started American Cancer Society Relay for Life and still doing it today. Relay for Life is such a fun time over each year. I also do Relay for Life for my friends and family. I have raised over twenty five hundred dollars. I love raising money, making new friends, and learning where the money is going. I am on the committee and doing the best I can while going through chemotherapy. During high school I got invited to National Honors Society (NHS). I did it for the last two years of high school. This is my life and I love it and the wonderful people I meet each day. I love talking to people, making new friends, and enjoy making people smile, laugh and just feel better. I love volunteering with Relay for Life. I enjoy knowing I am trying to save lives. This is because I must be here for a reason so I am trying to make others happy and know how it can be taken away at any time. SO REMEMBER TO LIVE EACH DAY, AND LOVE IT, WHILE LOVING TO LAUGH.".
