Nicole's Story
Life
After high school I went to the University of Pittsburgh for two years. Then I moved back home for two years. In 1994 I moved to Columbia, South Carolina to share an apartment with my sister. While living in Columbia I obtained an Associate in Arts from Midlands Technical College and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree in Women's Studies from the University of South Carolina. In March 2003 I was recruited by the Chinese Culture Center in Columbia to teach English as a second language in China. I lived in Columbia until July 2003. I then stayed with my folks in Sidney until the end of August when I left for China. I lived in Jinan, China for five years teaching English to elementary and high school students. Then I spent a year teaching high school girls and two months teaching preschool in Seoul, South Korea. I came back to the states (South Carlina) in March 2010. In August I started studying at Power Plant Technology at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. I graduated in May 2012 and started adjunct teaching for OC Tech that fall, where I am still employed.
School
High school. Do it again? Not in a million years! I'm enjoying the wisdom (haha!) I've gained getting to my forties. Also, I don't think I would have had the courage to go to China back when I was in high school.

me skills I would later use for taking notes and cramming for college exams. I also have to thank Mrs. Danford for enabling me to enjoy learning another language. I hated French before she came to our school. While I don't speak any of the languages I've taken over the years well(French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Korean, and a few phrases in Urdu, Thai, and Japanese), I have enjoyed trying them out. I can get by in Chinese and order food in Korean, but I need to work on building my vocabulary in both languages. I recently started "Spanish for Dummies", but it's slow going due to my schedule.
Workplace
I worked at the Sidney Burger King for almost two years from '92-'94. Then I moved to Columbia, South Carolina where I worked for Pilot Travel Center as a diesel cashier for five years. Then I delivered pizza for Papa John's for six months. After blowing the transmission in my car I went back to my old job at Pilot Travel Center for another three years. Then I spent six months at SuiteOne Hotel as a night auditor. In August 2003 I moved to Jinan, China where I was an English teacher at Jinan Foreign Language School in Jinan, Shandong Province, China for five years. I worked at Dongduk Girls High School for one year and two months at a private preschool in Seoul, South Korea. I started working at TJ Maxx in 2010. Then I started working at OC Tech in August 2012.
