Norma's Story
Hi All,
The fifty years since graduating has simply whizzed by and brought far more beauty, laughter and happiness than any difficulties or hardships that came along.
After graduating from High School (waddling across the stage to get my diploma at the 7th month of pregnancy) I gave birth to a cheerful baby boy later that summer. My son, Derek, yikes, lives in Rocklin, CA and is getting ready to turn 50 this summer and retire. I followed that up 14 years later with a daughter, Robyn, who lives in Portland, and matches me in loving literature, music, playing and hiking as often as possible. I spend once a week with my energetic 9 year old grandson in Rocklin, but have stopped trying to catch his fastball baseball pitches or outshoot him in basketball. He's way ahead of me in those areas but we still have great adventures together every week. I'm looking forward to taking him to see the Giants and the Padres play in San Diego this July.
After spending an enjoyable first few years at Sacramento State as a music major, I came back to reality and realized I was in great need of a degree that would help me find work so instead of Music I got a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Thus, began a 30 year career in Nursing in which I focused on Public Health and loved the social justice, community-based and holistic approach before holistic became a popular catch-phrase. I worked in Placer County, Sacramento County and Sonoma County in the role of Nursing Director for 20 of those thirty years, retiring in 2007. I've gone back to work several times and am currently working a few hours a week because I still love the field.
My other great love is music and adoring my piano practice time every day, playing with lots of classical and sacred musicians...Expand for more
In the area and providing half of the music program at a church in Santa Rosa.
Sonoma County where I live is an excellent place to hike and while I have some hiking buddies that I partner with frequently, I also try to take a few hours to my self every week to hike. I may not be fast but I have energy and endurance and every hike is a great pleasure.
In 2001, I met and later married a lovely, gregarious, man, Mike Doyle, who had a generous nature and a profound belief in Christianity. He also had an infectious sense of humor and a spirit of spontaneity and we spent 11 extremely happy years throwing ourselves into many adventures and sharing a zest for life. Sadly, he only lived a year after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2013 and yet even that last year was special because we still did all the things we enjoyed including traveling and eating our way through lots of great food. It was a great privilege and profound experience to be with him and my step children as we tenderly ushered him out of this world and on to his next journey. Seeing his peaceful face made me eternally grateful that his last year was so full of wonderful things that he enjoyed to the fullest and that his last hours were free of pain or worry.
So now I am currently buying another home in Sonoma County and preparing to do the shifts that life brings after great changes. I have developed a lot of deep roots here and enjoy the access to San Francisco with all the special things it provides, as well.
I look forward to seeing old friends at our reunion in September and connecting with some of you that I recognize in the yearbook but didn't know well in high school. I hope we will all share and hear a lot of collective wisdom that we have gathered over five decades.
